Jonestown was a horrible example of religion getting used by a madman. Good enough reason than any to show religion the door. Seems like it should be further in the past.

Jones, I believe, actually was an atheist, though he spent some time as a preacher, too. A better critique would be that it's an example of the harms of dogmatism, and of blind faith and obedience.

I agree with your analysis about it been blind faith. I must say after reviewing multiple tapes/videos of Jonestown and Jim Jones in his preacher roles I am not sure I would call him an atheist. But then again that's my perspective as he self identified as an atheist.

Dadman the poster child of the permanently bewildered.

It was a religion that he sucked the thoroughly pathetic seekers of GOD into and his GOD killed them.

The god in the bible was quite fond of slaughtering people, what makes you think that it wasn't him?

All he ever said to me was, "Explain this" and "Explain that". Once I explained and asked some questions, he again said, "Explain this" and "Explain that" - and didn't even attempt to answer anything. One series of questions was asked to him, I believe, three times with no answer.

I'm half-convinced that it's a teen-ager trolling. No adult would be that dumb, with two reasonably well-known exceptions.

Well, a few points: Jim Jones was a liar--that doesn't mean that his followers knew that, just as Jesus's followers were likely unaware that he was a charlatan or a madman. But more to the point, there are a HOST a reasons a person might "die for what they knew was a lie".

Well, first if you expect a reply, you'd do well to hit "Reply & Quote", since otherwise the person you're responding to is unlikely to know you responded, and you can dishonestly claim victory in any discussion by default--and certainly that's not your goal, right?

As to you waiting, here's a general one:

If one believes that the lie is a better thing to be believed than the truth, and so it's the reasons FOR THE LIE that you're dying for.

Or,

If one believes one cannot escape one's death, anyway, and so sees no merit in acknowledging the lie.

No, it clearly wouldn't--since you have no grounds except the bible to say that he did. The same bible with contradictory claims, particularly about the time of the resurrection.

where did his body go ..

Lots of places are possible. Doesn't mean he rose from the dead.

all they had to do was to display the body ..
Who's "they"?
His followers had a vested interest in keeping the myth alive--and not all of them might have been "in on it", if it were a conspiracy of followers, thus many not knowing of the lie.

Christianity would have ended right there

I don't think so. i'm sure there would have been some who believed anyway.

Again, you have to use the reply function to alert someone you're replying to them. I'm not spending the day just waiting for you to respond.
