Not pc for computer and so not the wrong thread. No it appears Google has caught the political correctness bug, blocking suggested meanings for the search 'Islam is'.

Such restrictions do not apply for other religions, nor atheism. Such suggestions tend to be littered with negative claims of the belief in question (check 'atheism is', 'Christianity is'), so overly pc once again? Absolutely.

Google has a long tradition of maintaining the integrity of its search: http://www.google.com...

A Google spokesman explained to Wire.com, "This is a bug and we're working to fix it as quickly as we can."

There's no need to scream "censorship" just yet.

It probably is self-censorship on the part of Google. But, who cares? Its their decision to do as such.

Not denying they can do such things at all, merely the motivation. :)

I gotta say; for whatever reason they did have self-censorship, I don't think it was from direct external pressure. Think about it.

In the US especially, the Christian right is so rabid that they'll launch a lawsuit against you for offending anything to do with them. Same with the Church of Scientology. However, Google allows both of those to pop up.

But with Islam, it doesn't. I suspect this is because those at Google were seeing some very, very bad results popping up, and that they didn't feel it was right to let it go.

They've also "censored" "Pastafarianism is." This makes sense, because Muslims and Pastafarians are the two groups most likely to commit violence against Google if Google doesn't bow to their demands of censorship.

I just tried it. It didn't suggest anything. Which is odd, because it will usually suggest up to hundreds of words.

They went beyond political correctness, not just censoring the negative words, but also the positives.

I, personally, don't really care if when I type in "Chritianity is" into Google, it suggests I complete my typing with "Lies", but I suppose Google has some corporate need.
