Atheists are mentally ill.

All research and evidence leads to the conclusion of these facts:

+Atheists are deeply depressed.
+Atheists have the higher suicide rate out of any belief system.
+Atheists suffer from social anxiety and negative perception (confidence issues).
+Atheists have an irrational hatred and obsession with religion leading to more social problems.
+There are no mental health benefits of atheism. It is devoid of rational thinking and mental protection.

The atheist typically ignores all of the sources and responds in anger accusing you of "lying" and being a Christian. They start proclaiming that they are not mentally ill for not believing in a "sky daddy" (their childish view of a god) but yet go onto prove it with their emotional responses showing that they are mentally unstable and can't accept the truth. Not one can address the question and not one can acknowledge the scientific sources.

The studies you are quoting are using small samples. Do they represent all atheists. Moreover they are representing atheists in western countries who have to face persecution.
There are many studies in which atheists are less depressed. See the following studies

Not one can address the question and not one can acknowledge the scientific sources.

First and foremost, your initial topic is a question. Your first comment is then an assertion that atheists are mentally ill. Are you questioning or asserting?

"Atheists are deeply depressed."
Depression is not a result of atheism or vice versa. Depression is a chemically induced, or lack thereof, condition within the brain. A christian is susceptible to depression as any other individual is including an atheist.

"Atheists have the higher suicide rate out of any belief system."
I am unfamiliar with that assertions credibility. You fail to comprehend that atheism is not a belief system. It is a reality based position. A worldview that encompasses an interaction with reality.

"Atheists suffer from social anxiety and negative perception (confidence issues)."
So can any non atheist individual.

"Atheists have an irrational hatred and obsession with religion leading to more social problems."
I can effortlessly reciprocate your assertions and state the inverse: Theists have an irrational hatred and obsession against non believers leading to more social problems.

"There are no mental health benefits of atheism. It is devoid of rational thinking and mental protection."
Does religion offer the individuals who choose to partake in it mental health benefits? Rational thinking is devoid in atheists? Individuals who are under the impression that the Bible illustrates a literal depiction of how reality operates is devoid of rational thinking. Are you aware of what is not devoid amongst atheists? An honest position about reality. Refusing to assert convictions that are not evidently verifiable.

Please provide evidence of the existence of God. We will proceed from that juncture.

I am agree with the determinations about atheists. Please dont get offended, I am not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. But this is true, big part of atheist have psychological problems. I think this is because of they deny something which is in human nature. Faith in God is something congenital, atheism is not something congenital, its just a reaction against theism. To say there is no God, someone should say there is God. Can you understand what I mean ...

You've misrepresented each and every one of your points. Atheists have higher rates of depression. This does not equate to all atheists being depressed.

Atheists don't incorporate false beliefs as a means of emotional pacification. This necessitates that there are more emotionally traumatic events for atheists to cope with. Religion operates similarly to a drug to calm the emotional backlash. If a theist suffers the death of a loved one, they can console themselves in the ridiculous belief that they will re-unite with them after death. Atheists choose to cope with the reality instead.

+Atheists have the higher suicide rate out of any belief system.
And? Police officers have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession. The odds that an officer will kill himself are seven times higher than the odds that he will be killed in the line of duty. Does that mean police officers are all mentally ill?
Once again, this is due to the fact that atheists don't use the mentally numbing beliefs of theism to give themselves false hope. Ignorance is bliss and the blissful are less likely to be depressed. They're also less likely to display significant intelligence and it has been confirmed through numerous studies that less religious people tend to have higher intellects, while less intelligent people tend to be more religious. Simple-minded people do tend to be happier. They also tend to be less capable individuals and often don't understand when they are being treated unfairly.

+Atheists suffer from social anxiety and negative perception (confidence issues).
There is nothing delusional about this. Atheists are unjustifiably one of the least trusted groups in all of society. This is due to the intense propaganda war theists have waged against us throughout religious history. If you are unjustly accused and unjustly untrusted, it will affect you. We are the victims of irrational, unjustified and inhumane smear campaigns against us. Certainly, this is partially to blame for the social anxiety, the higher rates of depression, and many other effects resulting from living in a majority which is intellectually less capable, highly superstitious and easily swayed by propaganda to see us as a threat and untrustworthy. And yet, atheists are shown to be far less likely to engage in socially disruptive behaviors (Greg Paul Study), and more than 35-times less likely to engage in serious criminal behaviors than Christians and many other theists groups (Federal Bureau of Prisons Study).

+Atheists have an irrational hatred and obsession with religion leading to more social problems.
We are persecuted, wrongly accused and berated by religion. The religious majorities continually violate our civil rights and see nothing wrong with treating us as less moral, despite the fact that statistics show that we are actually more moral than most theists. A bit of anger is completely justified and there's nothing irrational about adversarial feelings toward those who persecute you, misrepresent you, and demonstrate irrational biases against you.

+There are no mental health benefits of atheism. It is devoid of rational thinking and mental protection.
Unless you count superior intellect, greater personal integrity, a greater understanding of demonstrable reality, and practiced rationality in place of practiced unbridled emotionalism. If your idea of a rational belief is belief in that for which there is no evidence, then it should surprise none of us that you can't fathom that belief in that for which there is evidence, and a lack of belief for that without evidence, is the purely rational and logical position.

The truly funny thing about this thread is that;
- if you admit that you believe in invisible people, you're considered to be delusional.
- If you believe you can communicate telepathically with unevidenced entities, you're delusional.
- If you think you have invisible friends, you're delusional.
- If you believe you can never die and will continue to exist forever, despite all of the evidence showing that to be untrue, you're delusional.
And being delusional is most certainly considered to be a form of mental illness, whereas social anxiety and depression are rated more as a common "disorder". But the religious majority has changed the rules so that their special forms of delusion are widely accepted, simply because they are so wide-spread. In a world of the mentally insane, the sane and rational man is seen as a complete lunatic.

As Sam Harris has put it; "Religion allows people - by the billions - to believe things which only lunatics can believe on their own. If you get up in the morning and believe that saying a few Latin words over your pancakes will turn them into the body of Elvis, you are certifiably insane. But if you believe essentially the same thing about a cracker and Jesus, you're just a Catholic".

Those who demonstrate extreme delusional beliefs, who speak to beings which offer no evidence that they exist, are in no position to classify anyone else as being mentally ill. There are very good reasons we don't have mentally ill people working as psychiatrists and psychologists. As a theist, your mental illness goes well beyond depression, social anxiety, and the effects of unjust negative perceptions. You are thusly in no position to be pointing fingers at anyone.

Those who read books which present talking snakes, living inside whales, giants, dragons, zombies, witches, wizards, unicorns and the temporary cessation of planetary rotation as real events and creatures, and yet can't understand that the book is fiction, are either chronically mentally retarded, or clinically delusional.

That is a very strong statement you are making. The psychology of atheists is a highly controversial subject within sociology

All research and evidence leads to the conclusion of these facts:

Not "all. "Ventis (1995) has argued that secular people are actually psychologically healthier than religious people (see also Beit-Hallahmi 2007)

"religiosity can have a negative or no influence on depression (Buggle et al.
2001; O"Connell and Skevington 2005; Sorenson et al. 1995; Francis et al. 1981; Wilson
and Miller 1986)."

From (http://www.pitzer.edu...)

+Atheists are deeply depressed.

Many factors involved with this one. Also interesting that in people within general, Western, democratic, atheistic countries are generally happier than people not.

"international comparisons show that it is the most secular nations in the world that report the highest levels of happiness among their populations (Beit-Hallahmi 2009; Zuckerman 2008; De Place 2006)"

+Atheists have the higher suicide rate out of any belief system.

External, cultural factors.
+Atheists suffer from social anxiety and negative perception (confidence issues).

Many possible variables.
+Atheists have an irrational hatred and obsession with religion leading to more social problems.

Maybe some. This is probably a cultural phenomenon associated with the new atheist movement. I somewhat agree with some of this.

Even so, "atheists indicated less prejudice against ethnic minorities and homosexuals than did highly religious people."

+There are no mental health benefits of atheism. It is devoid of rational thinking and mental protection.

Your sources don't back this claim up.

"converts report a significantly higher sense of personal growth and autonomy (Ryff scale) than members of religious traditions.

"deconverts score significantly higher on openness to experience"

Sources:

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1540-6237.2008.00520.x/abstract (The Association of Suicide Rates with Individual-Level Suicide Attitudes: A Cross-National Analysis)

Related to cultural factors. Abstract says: "persons residing in nations with relatively high suicide rates are more approving of suicide than their counterparts. The model was replicated for the prediction of support for euthanasia. A social learning perspective was further supported by results linking 1970 suicide rates with suicide acceptability among older adults in 1990."

This is unsuprising given that atheistic countries (I'm talking about the Scandinavian countries in particular) tend to hold a lower value of life in support of eg. euthanasia

In China stress plays a role in the amount of suicides (http://digitalcommons.unl.edu...)
iasp.info/pdf/papers/Bertolote.pdf (A global perspective in the epidemiology of suicide)

Same answer as above.

pub.uni-bielefeld.de/publication/2050070 (Atheists, Agnostics, and Apostates)

"Some studies in which atheists and agnostics have been explicitly identified have detected a U-shaped relationship in which the most and least religious groups report fewer symptoms of mental illness or better well-being scores than the moderately religious group (Donahue, 1985; Riley, Best, & Charlton, 2005; Shaver, Lenauer, & Sadd, 1980)."

"firm conclusions about the relationships between health and atheism, agnosticism, or apostasy cannot yet be drawn (Stefanek, McDonald, & Hess, 2005)"

link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10943-011-9541-1# (Psychological Distress Among Religious Nonbelievers: A Systematic Review)

This one seems to be your best source. Still only examines 14 articles. Not comprehensive. May be selectively picked (I doubt it though). Other articles have different results.

The atheist typically ignores all of the sources and responds in anger accusing you of "lying" and being a Christian. You very own source (Atheists, Agnostics, Apostates) states that: "atheists were found to be less dogmatic and zealous in their worldviews"

Blackford's book "50 Great Myths About Atheism" according to a quick Google search also seems to address some of these arguments, with reference to some of the papers that you put forward.

Also, I strongly suspect that you have copy-pasted your source from somewhere else. A quick search of your "text" on Google reveals that there are a variety of websites which says exactly the same thing.

Perhaps some of what you have said is somewhat valid, but....

Basiclilly you are right, in my experience i know many people suffering from these problems, religion has a solutions to every aspect of life, it has answers but athiestism is just making and embodying rules and laws from the individual perspective, thats mean your are your own "God". but in religion the regulation and laws are true 100% because its transcendent our human thinking... that comes from God the absolute true and it cant change. as the Quran says that who forgot God, God made them forget their own themselves.

Atheists are not mentally ill. We have a greater ability to see logic and reason than Theists do, which essentially make us above all of you.
Oh, and by the way, your research is horribly skewed and invalid in almost every way. Try again.

They start proclaiming that they are not mentally ill for not believing in a "sky daddy" (their childish view of a god) but yet go onto prove it with their emotional responses showing that they are mentally unstable and can't accept the truth. Not one can address the question and not one can acknowledge the scientific sources.

A huge number of atheists don't have psychiatric issues. Many theists do do have them. It's a totally meaningless distinction and in no way supports anything about 'human nature'. Faith in got is not congenital, as evidenced by people who grow up without hearing of god not having any belief in one.

But yes, atheism is only a reaction to the claim there is a god. Before that claim is made, we are all atheist but don't have the need to articulate it.

So do religious theists. This is not useful.

You made a great many blanket statements on very flimsy evidence. You never really "cited" anything, and the first two links you provided were merely snippets of what was available. I'm not about to pay to read the "citation" associated with the ignorance posted by a single religious theist. I stopped loading links, after the psychological distress link prompts for payment, in order to read the publication.
There was no question posed, to address. Mental illness of atheists has not had enough evidence put forth to even qualify as an hypothesis, let alone drawing the type of conclusion that has been drawn, here. Further, I wonder if you will be accused of:
"Being abusive"
"attacking"
"trolling"
"being hateful"
"being evil"
... or any number of other distasteful behaviors by the same person who does so when this type of article is posted about the religious theist(s)? It's doubtful. The beauty of this, however, is that the ignorant conclusion drawn in order to post this obviously inflammatory thread is easily dismissed as the ramblings of a deluded, lesser mind.
Logic and Reason are the precursor to Justice.
Faith and zealotry are the precursor to Folly.

Of course we are.
We are the ones who can't understand why we wouldn't go around raping and killing if we didn't have a god and a holy book and a fear of eternal punishment. Those are the only reasons we aren't mindless sociopaths.

Oh wait I think that's what the religious say.

The truly funny thing about this thread is that;
- if you admit that you believe in invisible people, you're considered to be delusional.

This is probably the best response to anything that I have seen on this site. Well said, Beastt.

Atheism is not neccessarily a religion ir a belief system. And correlation doesn't always imply causation. No amount of wishful thinking changes that.

The atheist typically ignores all of the sources and responds in anger accusing you of "lying" and being a Christian. I have had the displeasure of that happening to me, but this is far from typical. Atheists as a whole aren't any more mentally stable or unstable as theists are as people. The atheist could reverse that on theism and say the exact same thing you just said except concerning theism and religion in general. You are making sweeping generalizations and you've provided no justification for them whatsoever.

Where I come from, everyone grows up as 'children and babies'. But that's pretty much beside the point, since all you're doing is making an appeal the majority. Just because lots of people - or even all people - believe something doesn't make it any more likely to be true. The more we discover and understand about the world, the clearer it becomes that many, if not most, of our 'default' beliefs about it are wrong.

We are born with predispositions rather than in-sitiu knowledge and beliefs. Until we've learned some language to represent concepts with, we don't believe anything.

Large-scale surveys show dramatic declines in religiosity in favor of secularization in the developed democracies. Popular acceptance of evolutionary science correlates negatively with levels of religiosity, and the United States is the only prosperous nation where the majority absolutely believes in a creator and evolutionary science is unpopular. Abundant data is available on rates of societal dysfunction and health in the first world. Cross-national comparisons of highly differing rates of religiosity and societal conditions form a mass epidemiological experiment that can be used to test whether high rates of belief in and worship of a creator are necessary for high levels of social health. Data correlations show that in almost all regards the highly secular democracies consistently enjoy low rates of societal dysfunction, while pro-religious and anti-evolution America performs poorly. Mental illness is not confined to Atheists, nor is it universal amongst them.

A lot depends on what you classify as Mental Illness". Since psychiatrists reckon that 1 in 4 of us suffers from some for of mental illness or other, however mildly.

For instance, an irrational fear is a form of mental illness so are you afraid of all spiders?

To be honest I often think when I look round me that the proportions are the wrong way round, and that is even less than 1 in 4 which do not have some form of mental illness or issue.

Mental illness has a very undeserved stigma attached to it.
