If Satan first tempted Adam & Eve, who tempted Satan? If he tempted himself, then why do we need a Satan to explain temptation? It could simply be our own thinking.

Sure but it doesn't really matter in the end. We don't need Satan to explain temptation, Satan or no Satan temptation begins in the mind and is where it needs to be dealt with.

Romans 12
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

James 1
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
