Lets see if we can have a discussion on this topic without insults.

My suggestion is that Athiest are here because they are interested in the topic of God. There is something that draws them in. I did not always know God existed, I was an agnostic most of my life but religion and god was fasinating. Why did so many people believe? How does religion weild so much power over people? I am no religious, actually I dislike religion in general, but I know God exists. I can to that through my need to seek the truth. To understand what I did not know. It is my suggestion that this is why athiests are so prevalant on this board.

Think of this, I do not believe dead people haunt us as ghosts. But, I have never visited a paranormal board and argued endlessly with the people who see ghosts because I am so set in my belief that that exercise would be as pointless as discussing the existance of elves. Yet, athiests love discussing God and religion, and I think they should keep it up, because that is the true path to understanding.

Another possibility. Some_if not many_atheists troll this board to deconvert some folks.

Nah, I doubt that any of the Athiests here are on a mission to deconvert people. They argue because they are lost. Sometimes they get upset and angry but that is natural.

Everyone, theist or atheist, is here for their own reason. I am here on debate.org because I find the challenge of debating to be extremely useful in real life. The more I argue my position the better I understand it and am therefore able to better articulate it, or recognize that I was wrong and change it. Either way, it improves my self confidence and has turned me from someone who used to be afraid of being asked to explain myself to someone who welcomes and even thrives in it, which has made a tremendous impact on my professional life.

I used to debate all kinds of positions but when I finally decided to let go of my emotional need to believe in God and heaven and listen to the arguments here in the religion forum, I found that the philosophical discussion here regarding things like the burden of proof and what is required to establish existence claims was far more fascinating then arguing over the merits of socialism. So here I am.

Why don't you just listen to an atheist tell his story instead of guessing why atheists are in here? Maybe if you listen to them, they will tell you the reason they're in here. Many atheists know the Bible better than most Christians because they were once Christians themselves who studied the Bible and the history of it's making. To argue with them is pointless but to listen to them is a learning experience.

God knows that Christianity was only used to teach His people how to build things ( false gods ), not to teach His people about Him or His eternal plan. Many atheists know that Christianity isn't being used to teach people about God and His plan. All they see are hypocrites pretending to be someone they aren't.

I agree with your sentiment but a post titled "Athiests please tell me your story" would not have had as much traffic. Hence, less stories.

Have you tried an OP with the title, "Atheists please tell me your story" ? When you assume something you don't know for sure by not doing something because of your assumption, then you won't know for sure.

The example of arguing against ghosts is irrelevant, as no one seeks legislation based on the belief in ghosts. Overall, atheists are here for at least two reasons:
1. examining their own beliefs or lack their of.
2. encouraging others to explore their own seemingly unexamined beliefs.

The reason atheists are here is simply out of curiosity. They are curious about Christians who gather together to worship a wooden cross. They are curious to know why a Jewish carpenters son who was tried, convicted and put to death for blasphemy 2000 years ago holds the power over 2 billion Christians who believe he can offer them eternal life if they accept him. His teachings that resulted in his own crucifixion is seen as a promise to their eternal life. Atheists are curious about this irony.
Atheists are also curious to understand how a local Jewish event that took place 2000 years ago in a small Jewish village, the crucifixion of a Jewish carpenter can implicate the whole world in his death. Even the Jews who asked for his death have moved on and continue to reject his claims.
Atheists are also curious to know how the bible which does not contain any math or science to even meet the requirements of a grade 6 schooler is used by Christians as the ultimate source of authority and the inspired word of God himself. Call it arrested development but the same bible has challenged Christian intellect for 2000 years. Verses from the bible are liberally quoted by Christians to heal the sick , stop natural disasters and provide for the needy. What it does not do is keep Christians from committing crimes. 80% of convicts in prisons are Christians.

So, let me see if I understand your position correctly: lets not insult people, but lets presuppose they are 'lost'. And of course, your 'side' is that you are -not- lost.

Starting off a few posts deep with condescension probably is not the way to follow your suggestion.

Atheists are more secure as people and are less prone to criminality. 80% of convicts in prison are Christians. Atheists find Christian beliefs ridiculous. Secularism is the modern atheist.

Because most people are christian in the USA. Also most Atheists convert while in prison. Bad example

I'll just speak for myself. I'm an atheist and I love the religious discussions. But not for the reasons you suggest. I'm tired of humans believing in magic. I'm tired of humans rejecting are best path to truth, science. I'm tired of religious folks trying to impose their views on others. I'm tired of religious folks killing others because their god wants them to. I'm here for one reason. To undermine the belief of the faithful. Why? Humanity needs to move in the direction of reason and evidence. We have problems that need to be addressed. We need to understand reality to address them. Theist significantly misunderstand reality. Make no mistake about it. This atheist is here to tear religion from the believer, with the hope reason will take its place.

Yeah Religion Sucks!, That does not mean there is no God. Just look for him.
How do you look for a god?

LOL. The Religion forums are constructed specifically to show just how utterly childish and irrelevant religious beliefs are, how they are shown to be little more than myths and superstitions and how ignorant and dishonest the followers of those religions.

It works great, too. Highly successful.

The Word of God cannot be found in a Bible, Quran, Book of Mormon or any of man's holy books.

Amos 8
11: "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.
12: They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it.
