There are too many books and sites to reference but the idea is that religion in it's earliest state came directly from the use of drugs/plants for spiritual purposes. Pagan and Shamanistic religions have a obvious history of using visionary plants. Hinduism seems to stem or at least have a strong relation to visionary plants (Soma in the RigVeda). Some people speculate that Manna from the bible were psychedelic mushrooms.

While most modern day religions have moved away from this practice. Do you think that is where it may all have started?

Interesting concept, but first it's individually unknowable. Were a concrete answer found for one, even an origin religion, there are still others. There is also the question, even were any religion based on such, would that lower the level of divine inspiration inherent?

As the the Manna from the bible, it seems highly doubtful that there was both so much psychedelic mushrooms, and that a whole nation could survive on mushrooms (of any type) alone.

It could have definitely complemented the evolution of religion, but it's a tricky concept, as many main-stream religions denounce the use of drugs and alcohol.
