One of four possibilities:

1. Indoctrination
2. Desperation
3. Forced on them by a religitarian that wasn't their mom or dad
4. Picked it up from friends/peers via the bandwagon effect

No matter which one it is, if your 23 or older and still a Christian, it's because you couldn't grow the b@11$ to think for yourself and question a phucking book because it threatens hell. After all, it was written in the desert, where the heat messes up peoples' heads. It's your head. How is believing it because it's in the bible different than believing something because it's in the Qu'ran? Believing because Confucius said it? It's no different than picking up a preference of Xzibit over Dr. Dre the same four ways and then Xzibit and Dr. Dre fanboyz starting a war over which rapper is better. It's just as trivial and is the result of peoples' inability to think for themselves.

Yes some people do it because they were indoctrinated or out of desperation or to fit in, but many others do it for different reasons. People justify their belief in christianity from what they have seen in the world. In the end I dont think you can sum up belief in christianity to these 4 things.

Exactly. They filled in the gaps because they were desparate for an explanation.

It's true that statistically, the faiths people adopt are most likely to come from within their family or immediate community. That observation helps refute the legitimacy of personal revelation, for example.

But this is not true just of faiths, but other attitudes and beliefs. So it applies to humanity over-all, and not just the religious.

It's also true that for many, religious conversion can be induced. British stage psycho-illusionist Derren Brown has demonstrated this with his presentation How to Convert an Atheist (https://www.youtube.com...) That's not to say all religious conversions are deliberately induced (though I have seen places where they are), but it means many sudden overwhelming conversions might be caused by non-faith reasons.

In the end, I don't think it's about courage, GDBH. I think it's that in the face of emotional pressure and cultural cues, thinking independently all the time is actually very hard. Moreover, many people believe that intensity of emotion is evidence of truth -- we often trust our feelings too much. So whatever causes an emotional experience, we may still follow the emotion.

There is plenty worth questioning about religion, and certain religious attitudes demand derision. However I think the process by which people develop strong, irrational beliefs is entirely human. I don't think it deserves mockery or scorn. I think it falls to us to help each other understand it and if necessary, come through it.

You regurgitate what you hear because you can't see without it.

You assume because you can't judge without it.

You accuse because you can't you can't stand without it.

You buy into all the atheist propaganda because you have no foundation, you are a sinking pit.

You are intellectually crippled because you have taken the bait, you are nothing without them. You are a mind behind bars.

All you did was assert that and provide no evidence to back it up.

No I do not. I dont just believe everything I hear. And I didnt get this stuff from someone else. I got it from me.

You assume because you can't judge without it.

This assertion is based on logic, not assumption.

You accuse because you can't you can't stand without it.

I don't just randomly accuse. And your ad homs arent going to hurt me.

You buy into all the atheist propaganda because you have no foundation, you are a sinking pit.

I have actual foundation, and thats logic and science. And what's your foundation? Pseudoscience and a book that threatens hell if you dont believe.

You are intellectually crippled because you have taken the bait, you are nothing without them. You are a mind behind bars.

Actually, I think for myself. If you can rationalize beyond a diversely written and interpreted book, that is the exact opposite of intellectual crippling.

Well, things turn out for different people. Some people started as atheists, but became Christians. One of the users on here has 3 children and both their parents were atheists. They didn't force atheism or religion on them, but they are now Christians who believe evolution and don't take the bible at times to be literal. I'll see if I can be an atheist at the age of past 23, but it will never be because I didn't have any b@11$. It is because I reasoned enough like I do every day when presented with difficult questions. I believe God by faith and that when I had experiences (not spiritual) that were hard to explain, the bible always provided an answer better than any other book. I agree the heat would mess with our heads, but I find it weird that some of their writings were true and came true for me. Not to mention, were wise words of philosophy. I know if I was under stress or pressure, I would be insane. Not the apostles nor Jesus.

Ummm.... are you over 23?

No, this is quite a prevalent reason as to why many are religious.
2. Desperation

Wrong
Not so sure about desperation, but it is conceivable.
3. Forced on them by a religitarian that wasn't their mom or dad

Wrong
Similar to indoctrination, but with more of an emphasis on coercion.
4. Picked it up from friends/peers via the bandwagon effect

Wrong
No, influences are a reason why many people do consider religion, or affiliate themselves with some sort of religious sanction.

Now let me tell you why you have no balls...

It is because I reasoned enough like I do every day when presented with difficult questions.

No, you simply filled in the gaps.

I believe God by faith and that when I had experiences (not spiritual) that were hard to explain, the bible always provided an answer better than any other book.

Whatever they are, God is not necessary to explain them.

...some of their writings were true and came true for me.

Total coincidence.

Not to mention, were wise words of philosophy. I know if I was under stress or pressure, I would be insane. Not the apostles nor Jesus.

Nobody needs the bible just to keep from going insane.

Actually I can think for myself. And there is no common way that all atheists think. And do you even know what thinking for oneself is?

All you did was assert that and provide no evidence to back it up.

And so did you :)

You regurgitate what you hear because you can't see without it.

You think for yourself yet you repeat the same assuming garbage that I've heard from every other Atheist.... Not very convincing.

No man can think for himself. Every thought comes from the mind of our Creator. You are who you are by they way you think according to God's program called Eternal Life.

Amos 4
13: For lo, he who forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought;

Psalm 33
8: Let all the earth fear the LORD, let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
9: For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood forth.
10: The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nought; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11: The counsel of the LORD stands for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 92
5: How great are thy works, O LORD! Thy thoughts are very deep!
6: The dull man cannot know, the stupid cannot understand this:

Psalm 139
17: How precious to me are thy thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

Most Christians don't know that their thoughts come from the mind of God, either. So don't worry about your thoughts.
