This documentary was extremely eye opening and linked multiple concepts together in my head about psychology and manipulation. Here are some concepts in play:

The Milgram Experiment (people will go until killing someone if ordered by authority) and the Stanford Prison Experiment (people will adapt social role of guard/prisoner quickly, and guards will brutally harass and assault those positioned below them). Both of these came into play during "the hole" and harassing former members for YEARS.

Foot-in-the-door psychology when joining: "You don't have to believe it all, just take what works for you." Then once you get deeper they reveal the crazier stuff, have you donate all of your money, abuse you, etc and threaten you if you leave with the information you've told them in the audits.

People stay in the "church" because:
-They are blackmailed with secrets confessed during auditing.
-They are afraid of being disconnected, and getting their secrets told.
-They might be followed, harassed, filmed, etc.
-Pride. Some have used too much of their lives there, and are unable to admit that they were wrong.

Here's the documentary if you have a couple hours to spare:

Scientology is the MOST evil religion in my opinion, because of its tactics. You can look at Islam and Christianity with a fresh perspective and realize it's bullshlt. Scientology is superficially plausible and even helpful in the first few months (feel better after confessing secrets and discussing pain), but it uses highly effective psychological manipulation to contain and extort from members, and uses brainwashed celebrities for marketing. It's not in-your-face violent like Islam, it prefers to use shadier practices of manipulation and litigation further its goals.

Those of us in Christ understand very well how religion robs you of your freedom in God. The world doesn't understand the freedoms we have when Christ is revealed to us. We never have to join a group again once we're free from the groups of this world.

Scientology is a cult. They use tactics 99% of other religions do not.

The Venn diagram of what makes them evil and what makes them a religion do not intersect.

The documentary was pretty good. It didn't even get into the really dark stuff about Scientology. There's a lot of other stuff out there that's harder to prove but given the volume of it, it i pretty hard to dismiss.

Yeah, I've heard similar things. They had an army of lawyers look over the documentary to make sure everything is played legally safe; that's probably why more crazy things aren't included.

The penalty for leaving Islam is death. The penalty for leaving Scientology is harassment, blackmail, disconnection from family and friends, financial ruin (pay for auditing), lawsuits, etc.
