Would you want an individual exactly like the god of the Bible as head honcho of your country? Why or why not?

A minor functionary of the Canaanite mythology mashed together with the greater Canaanite deity El, overtaxed at trying to keep the Jewish nation cohesive under exile and multiple colonial occupations, only to incur the additional burden of holding together a failing Roman empire and supporting the expansionary plans of multiple European monarchs and Popes, and now a patron of baseball, responsible for all the awards given at the Academies, and any piece of adventurism undertaken by the US Marine Corps, Yahweh has suffered paranoia, multiple personality disorder, sexual dysfunction, OCD, gynophobia, homophobia and workplace psychopathy ever since.

The poor guy needs a break, and right now I wouldn't let him run a sandwich shop.

In the Old Testament God ruled Israel and didn't let offenders get off scott free. He said they should get consequences in proportion to the severity of the crime. This is where an "Eye for an eye" came from.

And I like the full context which punishes a false witness --
(God was instructing human judges here)
Deuteronomy 19:16-19: "16 If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, 17 then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. 18 The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, 19 then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. 20 And the rest shall hear and fear, and shall never again commit any such evil among you. 21 Your eye shall not pity. It shall be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot."

(Though we are no longer bound in terms of salvation under the laws of the Old Testament.)

The video above shows a ballot with God or torture, and then says in the courtroom all you gotta say is sorry. That's not how God would run things. God will forgive you spiritually if you ask for forgiveness with a genuine heart and intent to change. In this metaphor we can't intermingle spiritual forgiveness with physical consequences for wrongdoings, they are seperate concepts.

He is responsible enough to handle knowing all our thoughts and actions, unlike the NSA who will sell out and be malicious. He knows our natures, which is why he's spiritually forgiving and longsuffering, but He is just and would run everything fairly.

Christianity gives my life meaning and purpose. I'm here for a reason, and my existence doesn't end at death. I have a reason to live during all hours of the day. That reason is the glory of God (which includes thinking and doing for others) and looking forward to spending eternal life with Him. Material things become more shallow knowing they won't last, it's nice.

Yes, because God is just and love.

He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.

God behaves just like a dictator or despot.

He demands you worship and praise him or die a horrible death. Any kind of behavior not in line with his commands, no matter how insignificant, He meets out the worst possible atrocities and never offers reconciliation or reform.

You are either with him or against him.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love as defined according to the Bible.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Exodus 20:5

God directly states he is a jealous god - jealousy is contrary to the definition provided by his own inspiration. If we accept the Bible actually is inspired by God (and he exists) then God is not love by his own admission.

I think the ballot analogy is fair enough. The 'choice' (according to the Bible) is God or torture. As far as the courtroom analogy, if an individual has a sincere intention to repent while asking for forgiveness, then the crime is wiped away. It is referring to the spiritual consequences (which in the hypothetical are physical) of physical actions before forgiveness and after.

The Yahweh God of the Old Testament would be without a doubt the worst and most murderous tyrant ever to rule a country if he were to take control..or be elected.

The homicidal egoist known as Yahweh would make Hitler,Stalin, Amin, and Pot look like choirboys.

The brilliant Richard Dawkins said it best when it comes to Yahweh.............

"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

So...um...no, I do not believe I would vote for him.

The jealousy in Corinthians is one which arises from envy. The jealousy in Exodus clearly doesn't from envy but from a sense of justice.

1) Yeah returned the executive branch to fiscal responsibility by personally spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on golfing. Not to mention letting IRS use unfairly target conservative groups

2) Removed the US from depression by bailing out the banks that caused it in the first place

3) Leads a transparent govt by lying about Obamacare.

2) Removed the US from depression by bailing out the banks that caused it in the first place

3) Leads a transparent govt by lying about Obamacare.

Did I misunderstand the topic? Is it God for president, or Obama for God?

(He is the only president who's performed the miracle of winning a Nobel Peace Prize before he'd earned it, so... you could make a case. :D)

So confused. :D

Yeah. Since, corruption won't be tolerated under Him. And the Biblical God won't be a weakling like Obama.

LOL. Yes, the President is still black, that must infuriate you to no ends. HA!

Playing that lame old race card again. I'm black BTW and the evidence that Obama is a weakling is clear from bowing to Saudi kings to ignoring his red line on Syria.

It's hilarious how you believers hate Obama yet he's done an extraordinary job. It is you believers who are the weaklings, intellectually.

I don't hate him. The fact that you couldn't rebut my reasons as to why he's a weakling but make an off-the-point remark about believers shows that Obama is indeed a weakling.

LOL. You have yet to show Obama is a weakling.

Yeah right.

Yes, it doesn't take very long to realize the amount of positive contributions Obama has given.

Nah. My crap tolerance isn't high.

That which I put in bold, you believe is a bad thing? Are you just making that stuff up?

Whether it makes sense or not, it was the only option opened at the time, one that had obvious consequences that most knew were going to happen, including the fact those firms were merely fined and few if any individuals saw jail time.

Yes, because God is just and love.

He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.
1 John 4:8

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
1 John 4:16

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

The jealousy in Corinthians is one which arises from envy. The jealousy in Exodus clearly doesn't from envy but from a sense of justice.

Don't let those pesky definitions get in your way!!

* oh , I forgot to mention we claim we will turn away from something (repent), but we often fail.
