What about the good. You seem to have a very limited view compared to others, I don't think anybody would appeal to religion if they held your views.

As it happens, people appeal to religion in hope of the exact opposite.

That people claim theirs is the only way.

This is a totally ridiculous concept, given that people come from many different cultures and backgrounds.

True, I realised this after I posted.

My apologies.

The part where your priest inappropriately touches you before the age of puberty and it scars you for life.

1) Atheists don't have to dislike organized religion.
2) But I do dislike *organized* religion as well as organized nonreligion (*cough* antitheism *cough*). That's because it results in differentiation, discrimination, and violence. I value secularism greater than I value atheism.

No problems, John. As a matter of fact, I think religion does significant good much of the time, and I've posted about that before. However, from an atheistic perspective, i think that in a modern world, the good religion does is secular, and replaceable.

Of the nonsecular things religion does, most revolve around theology, and while I think the bulk of theology false, not all of it is evil.

However, the part that hurts, harms and destroys people, and undermines human benefit to gain greater authority, privilege and profit, is mostly done under what I consider to be the false aegis of theological authority, and I identify all of that as evil.

Where many religious people blame bad functionaries for such evil, I view it differently. Bad authorities turn up everywhere, but their power is contestable, and their deeds can be held accountable. Theological thought however, cements malignant power and renders it unaccountable, so it's abused everywhere simply because it's so readily abusable.

So I'm strongly opposed to theological claims intellectually, and theological thought morally. Which doesn't mean I'm opposed to religion or the religious.

Well here is an example. People who when seeking to justify something claim that well it's God will/law what ever.

Funnily enough you will have a real hard time finding a God who will speak for it's self, what you will have no problem finding if your fellow human beings talking and telling you all sorts of things on it's behalf.

It's get tiresome listening to one person exalt their imaginary friend while condemning the other imaginary friend (false God) of others..........................

Scapegoating, however necessary it often is to any societal institution. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Equally-
a. The self-righteousness of many religious people - MY god is the only god - MY interpretation of holy scripture is the right one.

b. The delays in scientific advancement to the detriment of civilization.

c. The reliance on ancient beliefs as a guide to morality.

The fact that organized religion seeks to tell people how to behave, and by doing so, it judges everyone that is not willing to behave a particular way.
