Guilty. I have 2 friends who are preachers, my best friend is a fundamentalist, and my father used to be a preacher. So... it comes up from time to time.

No. My circle of friends is quite small and my family are all very strong believers. I would only cause heartache with people I care about. It's a very personal belief system around here so discussing it with co-workers or strangers would most likely be very contentious.

I'm kinda envious of your situation to be honest. Unless they hate having a discussion about it.

I have no one to talk about it with either. Everyone is just disinterested in philosophical topics. They'd rather discuss sports or how cute that sweater looks.

I don't intentionally avoid it. I see my friends so rarely that we just spend some time together doing an activity. However, when I was in University and we saw each other regularly I certainly has some great discussions with my friends.

I only discuss it when people ask what my religion is and I explain it to them. Beyond that, there is generally little discussion. My extended family on my father's side also likes to discuss religion with my father. Although they have opposing viewpoints, they often have civil conversations and can agree on a lot of things. I only occasionally interject.

It's just generally not something people are too interested in talking about, or people don't want to talk about it in case you offend someone (alternatively, maybe they're afraid they'll run into someone who hates their belief system). I think the latter is the primary reason people don't talk about it much, and is also the reason why my family is okay talking about it. We all know each other and accept one another, so we don't have much to fear in the way of offending people.

It goes in cycles.

I'm an atheist with a strong interest in morality, ethics and the history of human thought. I know a small number of people (maybe a half-dozen) who share those interests, and I'm happy to discuss religion (especially religious history, and its influence on morality) with them -- or with any stranger who evinces such an interest.

But I know far more people of faith who'd like to tell me what to think, rather than discussing how to recognise when thought is good. I have discussions with them too, but of a different sort. It has more to do with their education, ethics and accountability than with religion.

Ben, you're one of the more thoughtful Christian posters on DDO. While I don't agree with many of your assumptions or conclusions, I believe that the act itself of exploring the ideas you do is of moral and intellectual benefit. It's not just good for one's own development; your questions themselves are a gift to the development of others.

I'm sorry you don't have more people to explore your ideas with personally. I understand how that can be frustrating (I've had similar periods in my own life), and believe you deserve better. Were we neighbours, you and your questions would be welcome at my dinner-table, and in the company of my friends. :)

Yes, but not as often as online. I was president of the SSA at my university. I also have participated in "Ask An Atheist Day". There are a couple theist friends I had that were into philosophy so we discussed it.

Thanks for your kind words, Ruv. I appreciate the level of intellectual rigor you provide in response to my posts and to this forum in general (although many times it goes over my head). I like the idea of having an open, honest discussion in the company of others. As a side note I just consider myself an irreligious theist.

Nice. There should've been a non-secular student alliance too though. I would've joined it.

Yes, sometimes with my nephew. He's the only one interested.
