I wonder if it was a lie. I think it might well be that the Israelites really were defeated by a people who used iron weapons that were superior to the bronze the Israelites had. Judges 1:19 may be one of more honest verses in the OT!

As to dating, it is widely thought that the OT was heavily redacted (ie re-written) in and just after 7th century BC. Possibly iron chariots was the best excuse the priest in charge of 'editing' Judges could come up with for an embarassing loss. It's very hard to know what the truth is, other than it is almost never as written.

Quite so. I think it likely that the Isrealites were defeated by a people with superior weapons made of iron. As Judges forms part of a patriotic psudo-historical saga such defeats had to be explained somehow. Usually the reason given for defeats is that YHWH was unhappy with his people because they had started worshipping false gods or something similar. Blaming it on their enemies having superior weapons seems a rare example of simple reportage!

Iron was known in the middle east long before it was in the west.

The Egyptians had iron.

I think you're probably right. It would be difficult to build pyramids with copper chisels.

But apparently they did. The very ancient Egyptian iron was meteoric in origin and existed in tiny quantities - nothing like enough to equip the thousands of workers needed for the pyramids. The industrial production of iron came much later. The pyramids were built with wooden, copper and stone tools - and a helluva lot of human effort.

1st Samuel 13: 19-20; 19 Now no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, "Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears." 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines, each to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, and his hoe."

The plowshares, mattocks, axes and hoes, were not made of bronze muggins.

OH, But I do read non fiction muggins and did you know that the discovery of iron dates back to about 2000 BC. Iron artifacts dating back to the fifth millennium BC have been found in Iran by the archaeologists, what a pity that you have no understanding of the scriptures which are supported by our archaeologists.

Archaeology has proven much of the OT wrong. The Exodus is not even on the radar as historical according to most archaeologists.

I would be surprised beyond belief if any of their battle stories were true, certainly archaeologists have found no evidence supporting any of them.

When our scientists and biblical scholars, come to realise that Paul was correct when he said in Galatians 3: 17; "What I mean is that God made a covenant with Abraham and promised to keep it. The Law, which was given 430 years later, cannot break that covenant and cancel God's promise." Revealing that from the day the covenant was made until the Israelites entered Egypt in the 17th century, was a period of 205 years meaning that the Israelites who entered Egypt were there for only 225 years, and left that country, somewhere around 1567 BC, which is about 40 years before the destruction of Jericho according to Kathleen Kenyon, a most respected archaeologist who dug at Jericho over the seasons between 1952 to 1958, and her results were confirmed in 1995 by radiocarbon tests which dated the destruction of Jericho to 1562 BC (Plus/minus 38 years) with a certainty of 95%.

Abraham was 85 when God first made his covenant with him, Isaac was born 15 years after the covenant, when Abraham was 100. Isaac was 60 when his son Jacob was born and Jacob was 130 when he was reunited with his son Joseph in the land of Egypt. 15+60+130=205. So we see that there was a period of 205 years between the covenant and the entry of the family of Israel into Egypt, where they dwelt for 225 years before departing 430 years after God's covenant was made with Abraham.

If, according to Josephus the historian, the exodus of the Israelites did occur in 1567 BC, and Jericho was destroyed 38 years after 1567 (minus 38 years) this would mean that Jericho fell in the year of 1529 BC, close enough to the 40 years after the Exodus that the bible states that Jericho was destroyed by the conquering Israelites.

You have provided no evidence that your contradictory story is any more true than the lie that is Exodus.
The SCIENCE of Arhaeology has proved the Exodus to be a fable, I understand that if you allow yourself to believe the truth you are afraid of going to hell but hell is just as fabricated as the Exodus. Read some non fiction
