If you mean not allowing ignorance, hate, or just plain idiotic views to be freely expressed, then yes, that is intolerance.

Yes. It is also hypocritical.

I would suspect then that the definition of intolerance needs to include "not allowing" others to do something.

Here's what I gleaned from online dic:

- lack of tolerance; unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect opinions or beliefs contrary to one's own.
- unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect persons of a different social group, especially members of a minority group.

I think we need to be careful as to what we apply to human nature. Humans are capable of literally anything from complete self-sacrificing ourselves to complete strangers to committing the very worst of atrocities, neither of which is really human nature, but instead, merely the capacity of humans to do something.

Is it in your nature to mass murder? I don't think so, David. But, we all have the capacity to do it.

Yes but what do you mean by tolerant? It has been a fav with the proponents of political correctness to redefine it. Do you mean tolerance by two of different faiths backgrounds so on and so forth can solder side by side? or do you mean tolerant of all forms of human activity, and only the gov. can administer what is correct to do? As in police all un-tolerated activity. like in some societies one's wife laying with other men isn't tolerated, and in the US men take the stand that they have the right to lay with your wife if she wants him to, and is legal. hence the redefinition of what is or is not to be tolerated.

Exactly.

You are finally beginning to understand Christian love. That was the central message of Jesus that we should love one another.

It is a message which I don't agree. We have seen the results of Christian love.

You just confessed to your circular intolerance.

So, according to your dictionary disagree = intolerance. LOL.

That is not what you said.

You wrote:" : Is it intolerant to be intolerant towards intolerance?"

Your reading comprehension are abysmal, Hari,Trap, Tressspa, Pandit, Mantri, etc.

If you actually read what I said, it was, "I don't agree". Can you see that Hari? Should I underline it and make it bold, or do I need to dumb it down for you further?
You need to read your own OP. It was presented as a question. You sought help for your bafflement.

You said you didn't agree to Jesus's message of love.

Excellent, you finally figured out what I said after having had to repeat it to you. Well done, Hari, there's hope for you, yet.

I wrote:"You are finally beginning to understand Christian love. That was the central message of Jesus that we should love one another."

Your response:" It is a message which I don't agree. We have seen the results of Christian love."

So you are still stuck in circular intolerance.

You are still stuck in a reading comprehension problem.

So you were disagreeing with Jesus's message which proves you are still stuck in circular intolerance. You don't need my help to sort that out.

No sweat. I just put you on the ignore list like all the others. When one is beyond help ignoring them is the best solution. All forums provide that feature.

The value of tolerance isn't in itself as an ideal, but in the good it enables and the harms it prevents. For example, we know that intolerance exercised in ignorance leads to injustice and cruelty. We also know that ignorance yields to knowledge better under tolerance than under intolerance.

Nevertheless, there is no good to be had from tolerating acts that we know beyond doubt are needlessly harmful. We don't tolerate murders, muggings, assaults, and other crimes of violence, and we are ill-advised to tolerate political dishonesty, slander, vilification, or ignorance presenting as authority because these too do harms.

And the justification for such intolerance is not our own paternalistic authority, but independent accountability for what we know, and our demonstrable commitment to compassion and common good.

We should not fear to denounce harm when we can explain why it is harmful, and when we oppose it for everyone, and not just for ourselves.

Absolutely wonderful, Ruv. From what I've underlined the difficulty in achieving the desired results is how the former can be so corrupted, yet unimaginably attractive to the ignorant so much so as to affect the latter two.

I hoped that might've been where you were headed with the question, Danne, and am delighted you raised it.

I think the real issue here is that populism is always more appealing to the lazy, ignorant and scared than are meticulous evidence-gathering and critical thought. And populism loves dishonesty, slander, vilification and self-satisfied ignorance, because they're so good at mollifying the masses today, at cost to justice and freedom tomorrow.

I mentioned recently in another thread that just as organised crime emerges whenever there is strong urban infrastructure with weak rule of law, so populism appears whenever there are extensive communication networks with weak education in evidence and critical thought.

We know well the problems with populist political policies -- we can see evidence of them in the current US Presidential primaries, for example. The role of populism also looms large in the history of the great world religions, and it's hard to see that religious dogma is much more than some art, history and philosophy intertwined with ever-shifting populist magical thinking.

(Which also explains a lot about the pathologies of conversion, adherence and religious apologetics.)

No, just as killing a murderer in self defense isn't murder.

Tolerance has a utility to promote group harmony - anyone who threatens said harmony is an obvious threat to the group - this is where (self/group) defense applies. To put in other words, in a world where no one throws stones the first person to throw a stone (paradox?) loses their protection against stone throwing.

But this presupposes intolerance is necessarily bad. It's common sense that we should not tolerate bad/harmful/immoral things.
