I've heard numerous such stories; machete hackings and live burnings. I struggle to comprehend how one's convictions can be so strong that all empathy and shred of compassion is overcome. Sickening.

This crazy guy is incomprehensibly arrogant. Turkey was trying to jails some teenagers for tearing down posters of him (https://www.rt.com...) and has jailed people for insulting him on twitter (https://www.rt.com...).

And yet people insist religion is a good thing. Somebody please explain how that can be true.

I would say that there are good aspects to it and that this just proves that religion is not universally good, and sometimes horrendous.
