Christianity is on the decline in America.

https://www.washingtonpost.com...

Guess what is going up.

Suicides...

http://www.cnn.com...

https://www.washingtonpost.com...

-"more drug addiction, "gray divorce," and increased social isolation, have contributed to the growth in suicide, according to a variety of people who study the issue."

"S study by the National Center for Health Statistics also shows an alarming jump in suffocation " mostly hangings " as a suicide method. Use of that technique rose by 89 percent, after adjusting for growth in population, and by 157 percent for white women."

-"Among whites, there are more than seven suicides for every slaying."

-"with opioid abuse and alcoholism, suicide has attracted recent attention as one of the main causes of a surprising increase in mortality for white men and women since the turn of the last century, especially for those ages 45 to 54."

*

And the kicker?

-"the new data show, the age-adjusted suicide rate in the United States jumped 24 percent between 1999 and 2014, from 10.5 per 100,000 people to 13 per 100,000 people. The rate increased for both sexes and in all age groups from 10 to 74. The pace has continued into the first two quarters of 2015, separate data show."

Rolling into 1990 America was still 86% Christian.

http://www.cnn.com...

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com...

http://m.christianpost.com...

It is now about to go beneath 70% Christian.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org...

-"If you need any more proof that mental health disorders are a public health issue, look no further than rising suicide rates over the last decade and a half.

Deaths from suicide have increased 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, according to an analysis of Americans aged 5 and up conducted by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

-"The number of deaths by suicide for females ages 10 to 14 were relatively low compared to other age groups, but they had the largest rate increase " a staggering 200 percent " during 1999 to 2014 compared with the previous time period."

"Transcending your humanity and becoming one with God". It can't be understood outside of a religious context, because "God" is a religious concept.

So what? If all the atheists kill themselves you should be very happy since you will have a world which is filled with nothing but believers. All the wicked people will be gone.
No one will be left to tell you that you are believing in mythical characters so all believers will end up living happily ever after in their fantasy land. Hallelujah! Praise God!

"Transcending your humanity and becoming one with God". It can't be understood outside of a religious context, because "God" is a religious concept.

I see you have solid, unbiased sources this time, bronto, nice. There is more depression and atheism is rising and Christianity is on the decline, I see there is sufficient evidence for that, but do you have any evidence the suicides and depressions are linked to atheism?

Basically, what you're saying is:
Christianity is on the decline. Suicides and depression are getting more frequent.

Therefore atheism leads to suicide and depression?

There is countless of other possibilities - maybe a changing society, maybe more internet addiction leading to neglect or something like that? Concluding atheism is the cause is like staring at a blank dinner plate and concluding a lion flew in from Africa and ate your dinner.

You have good statistical evidence. But until evidence as genuine as those sources state that atheism is the cause for the misfortunes, you are only pulling conjectures.

How do you know the suicides were atheists? Maybe it's Christians killing themselves because they are losing ground.

The proportion of college educated adults in the U.S. has increased since 2000. Clearly atheism leads to better education.

The violent crime rate in the U.S. has decreased by half since 1990. Clearly atheism leads to a more peaceful society.

These are tongue-in-cheek, of course. Correlation does not imply causation. Bront, I suspect that on some level you know this. Yet it won't keep you from committing the same error in future threads. Consider whether that is intellectually honest.

Actually it's obvious that the poor godbotherers are topping themselves because they have lost their faith, that doesn't of course mean they embraced atheism.

I remember reading an explanaion for the slightly higher rates. It has nothing to do with atheism. The Scandinavian countries have a longer, darker winter than most other countries. During that time they are confined indoors for long periods. This leads to depression and results in an increase in suicides.

That seems plausible. I bet we could find higher suicide rates in any circumstances where individuals are forced to be more or less static.

It seems to be more likely the lack of sunlight, although research is ongoing:

Correlation is not causation. Many of your articles posit possible reasons for this increase in suicide - none of which are lack of religious belief.

Additionally, If your assertion were true, then we should expect secular countries to have a much higher suicide rate than religious countries, but looking at Scandinavian countries squashes that. Even Christian sources (Christianitytoday) acknowledge Scandinavian countries have suicide rates "only marginally higher than U.S. rates" in spite of being significantly less religious.

And, contrary to popular perception, Scandinavian countries do not have unusually high suicide rates; they are only marginally higher than U.S. rates.

And yet, the countries with the highest life expectancy are also the most secular.

In any case, at least atheists aren't actively killing people because of their religion.

The religion of deat. Keep it. We don't want it. But you should preach it nonetheless. Maybe someone needs your religion to give them that final shove off the cliff. Go for it. Their blood is on your hands.

While I am impressed by the amount of data you've put forth, you've also fallen into a classic logical error. Correlation does not equal causation. Just because Atheism and Suicide are on the rise does not mean that Atheism is causing the increase. If that were the case, I could make the case for the rise of Suicide and numbers of calories on average taken in by Americans in a day. See as we eat more in a day we get more suicidal. it makes no sense unless a direct study is done putting the two variables together.

"Transcending your humanity and becoming one with God". It can't be understood outside of a religious context, because "God" is a religious concept.

Transcending in the heirarchy of needs has little or no relation to God. In this contexts, it's not humanity you are transcending, it's the bounds of your own life. you're now fully realized in your life, and you want to bring other people there too. Almost no one reaches this stage, even the highly devout in religions, and they don't always commit suicide. So even if Atheism DID interrupt the heirarchy of needs (which it doesn't) , very few people would feel it.
