Few people know the real meaning of rainbow flag.

For any idea X, I've yet to met a person who claiming 'The real meaning of X' who is able to explain what makes their meaning real, and uniquely so.

And among choices of X I've seen words like 'Christmas', 'parenthood', 'democracy', 'truth', 'love', 'beauty', 'pick a religion', 'perfect meatloaf'.

What makes this claim unusual -- so far the only thing that does -- is it singles out a rainbow flag.

Yet what makes it typical is its promise to steal trust from something familiar, and re-invest it in something that isn't, based on the advertising trick of persuading people they have a need you can fill. And part of the means for doing that is to drum up interest by 'baiting' the reader with a promise unmet.

Which leads me to my point.

I think it would have been more honest to say:

A rainbow flag is now familiar in its use to celebrate sexual diversity, but has had other uses in history, including reflecting the Noahide Covenant in 16th century Europe, to symbolise Buddhism in 19th century Sri Lanka and later in mid-20th century world Buddhism, to reflect the early 20th century movement toward world corporate cooperatives, in a rainbow prayer shawl of the Bene Ohr Judaic movement in 1960s USA, and as a flag designed by the Indian spiritualist Meher Baba in 1924, and which is now flown in parts of India to commemorate his death.

Despite having researched none of the other uses, I now wish to claim primacy for the one use I care about: commemorating the death of Meher Baba.

There's a certain respect in being forthright. :)
