Very good. It perfectly explains the little knowledge most people have of evolution. It is not simple and can't be learnt in a couple of minutes but that does not mean it is not right. It is the best and most viable explanation we have as to the origins of life.
I wonder what it would look like if South Park did a send up of creationism........"Well first of all, this invisible thing picks up a piece of clay........."
If you thought the evolution skit was mildly funny, you'd be wetting yourself over this one.

You're missing a full stop, or a comma in that sentence.
I see it's become fashionable among creationists to post YouTube videos of which they're not the authors in lieu of, say, wringing a paragraph or two defending their beliefs. I think that has something to do with the fact their conventions amount to very little and it is their irrational distaste for evolution that gets the better of them, as illustrated in that video.

And that brings me to the irony in this post: POPOO5560 doesn't even realize at whom South Park's sarcasm was directed. It was not at Evolution. It was at the illiterate, quite possibly Christian, biology teacher.

The joke is on you, POPOO5560.

It's a pity, Omni, because the creationists 150 years ago were smart, sincere, dedicated scientists. Many of them contributed valuably to scientific methodology and results -- they just happened to be wrong about where those methods and results were headed. There's no shame in diligent, honest people being wrong in science.

But today, creationists are producing virtually no scientific output, even the ID guys. They're simply in the business of scientific dishonesty: misrepresenting science, overstating credentials, misrepresenting opinion as results, and telling people they don't respect how to think on behalf of a fundamentalist clergy who won't admit how cynical and dishonest they are in drumming up credence among the ignorant for the twin purposes of political advantage, and keeping their own fraudulent profession in work.

I really hope you don't think this obvious comedy video reflects actual science. For example the teacher makes evolution sound that evolution happens when an animal of one species gives birth to a new species. This is not how evolution happens at all.

Every animal has about 100 mutations so over every generation the species changes slightly. Over millions of years these mutations build up until the species is very different. So evolution happens very slowly and does not happen in just one generation.

Quite right although Darwin used the term to explain the "pond of soup" theory and that his own theory of evolution discounts metaphysical beginnings.

because there are so many people that don't understand how evolution works, and those people choose to remain ignorant rather than to educate themselves.

The jokes of South Park are often layered and subtle, Popoo. As other members have pointed out, this one's a parody of how evolution is sometimes misrepresented, rather than of evolution itself. That being so, it's not a joke at the expense of biology so much as a complex joke at the expense of people who reject evolutionary biology because they themselves have been lied to about it, or didn't understand it.

The Science forum is not really a place for religious doctrinal wars -- especially not for wars that were fought and resolved in the science community over a century ago. It's a place for people of any culture, creed and level of knowledge to discuss and explore science, and that really needs a minimum understanding of what science is and how it works. The humour in the clip is that the science teacher clearly doesn't understand how science works -- he just knows a warped version of the information science has produced.

And in that vein, as a scientist myself I think it's serious that a trusted part of society (especially, elders of Evangelical and fundamentalist beliefs) are lying to an ignorant part of society about their knowledge of science, and turning them from confused but thoughtful, into willfully ignorant and outraged for short-term political gain.

And that has nothing directly to do with atheism, secularism or even science, but has a great deal to do with dishonest people defending unearned privilege with deceit about other parts of their community.

So that's the topic you've opened, Popoo by showing a parody about people who don't understand or respect science trying to teach it. From the perspective of science and society, the part the joke-clip doesn't show -- the important part -- is how the teacher came by such a poor understanding of the science being taught in the first place.

Uh no, the joke is at the expense of those who don't understand evolution, folks just like you. The joke is on you, not atheists. The creators of Southpark understand and accept evolution, that's why they're making fun of people who don't, people like you.

In other words, you have been hoisted by your own petard. Chew on that one.

Yes, I think you have been pretty well tripped over on this one. It is out of ignorance, lack of knowledge or both that people fail to understand evolution which has been well and truly proven a hundred times over, the evidence is irrefutable.
Don't take it personally since we have a culture which is still weaning itself off Christian doctrines, whether it be in schools and colleges or at home. And don't worry, nobody is going to push the science down your throat, in particular atheists. it is up to you to do the research, if you want to.

Very good. It perfectly explains the little knowledge most people have of evolution. It is not simple and can't be learnt in a couple of minutes but that does not mean it is not right. It is the best and most viable explanation we have as to the origins of life.
I wonder what it would look like if South Park did a send up of creationism........"Well first of all, this invisible thing picks up a piece of clay........." and makes a whole heap of matter that they then explode to create everything that is ever known, where the matter comes form don't matter all that matters is that the matter is good for t he evolution theories
If you thought the evolution skit was mildly funny, you'd be wetting yourself over this one.

I would say diversity of life, rather than origin of life. That would be abiogenesis.

Quite right although Darwin used the term to explain the "pond of soup" theory and that his own theory of evolution discounts metaphysical beginnings.

Wrong again. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is still held as the most accepted and convincing explanation as to the existence of life on earth. It has been fully researched and confirmed through irrefutable evidence by numerous reputable scientists. Though others have challenged the theory, nobody has yet succeeded in proving it wrong.

They're simply in the business of scientific dishonesty: misrepresenting science, overstating credentials, misrepresenting opinion as results, and telling people they don't respect how to think on behalf of a fundamentalist clergy who won't admit how cynical and dishonest they are in drumming up credence among the ignorant for the twin purposes of political advantage, and keeping their own fraudulent profession in work.

why everybody taking it seriously its a joke at the expense atheists llol

Yes, I think you have been pretty well tripped over on this one. It is out of ignorance, lack of knowledge or both that people fail to understand evolution which has been well and truly proven a hundred times over, the evidence is irrefutable.
Don't take it personally since we have a culture which is still weaning itself off Christian doctrines, whether it be in schools and colleges or at home. And don't worry, nobody is going to push the science down your throat, in particular atheists. it is up to you to do the research, if you want to.

they already did it they brainwashed me im a zombie now... u atheist created my chance :D

Uh no, the joke is at the expense of those who don't understand evolution, folks just like you. The joke is on you, not atheists. The creators of Southpark understand and accept evolution, that's why they're making fun of people who don't, people like you.

In other words, you have been hoisted by your own petard. Chew on that one.

forgive me please!! i thought this was America!

Yeah, about that.
This is not America.
This is an international forum, a website.

I'm not surprised you mistook the two.
Given your position on Evolution, that is.

that tells all congratulations :D

I really hope you don't think this obvious comedy video reflects actual science. For example the teacher makes evolution sound that evolution happens when an animal of one species gives birth to a new species. This is not how evolution happens at all.

Every animal has about 100 mutations so over every generation the species changes slightly. Over millions of years these mutations build up until the species is very different. So evolution happens very slowly and does not happen in just one generation.

u guys need to watch southpark x)

Sorry, I am more of a futurama fan myself. If you want to take your science from cartoons, well it is a free country. I just hope you don't start making anti-physics posts because of some stuff on looney toons you watched.

I'm not allowed to stand up for myself? I thought this was America! Huh? Isn't this America? I'm sorry, I thought this was America.

No, you are standing up for the scientific accuracy of a cartoon.

Ruv i said atheists bcz they generally claim they dont (i hope) get influence by external stuff like beliefs...

Popoo, I think most atheists in this forum have acknowledged that they are influenced by various subjective beliefs. For example, atheists will support different football teams, and say theirs is 'the best'. Atheists think their own wrinkly little newborn children are beautiful and so on. :) Some atheists believe in astrology, or psychics, or superstitions like bad luck coming in threes -- though many don't (and I don't know any in this forum who do.) Some atheists know nothing about evolution, and a few know a fair bit about evolution, yet still reject it (again, not in this forum, but in general.)

All that makes an atheist is the rejection of the claim that theology is truth. On any other matter, you can find one atheist with one position, and some atheist with a different position -- and that includes evolution.

im not against biology and i cant say its garbage
I agree. :)

evolution makes sense its very rational... dont listen to ppl who saying its sh1t...
I super agree. :) The people saying it's garbage either haven't studied it, or have been manipulated by a small number of very dishonest Christian clergy who should be ashamed of themselves, or they simply hate where society is going, and blame science.

remember also in islamic golden age there was scientists and famous thinkers claimed what darwin said centuries after.
While I'm not aware of any mediaeval Muslim proposing evolution (and if you have a link, I'd love to read about it) science nevertheless owes a debt to Muslim scholars for early work in mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, medicine, geography, sociology and even early psychology.

And I'm sure we agree on the following: science is the birthright of every human being of every faith. It is a great moral and intellectual injustice to tell anyone of any faith that they must not study science because it is impious or blasphemous to do so. In Australia I've had Muslim colleagues and many Muslim students, and they all affirm that Islam upholds the value of scholarship and empirical inquiry, and so of course I strongly agree with Islam on this. :)

so its a general thing and i wasnt very clear about that i know.....
You were being cheeky and mischievous, which I know you like to do. :D I think members don't always realise when you're doing it. :)

So that's the topic you've opened, Popoo by showing a parody about people who don't understand or respect science trying to teach it. From the perspective of science and society, the part the joke-clip doesn't show -- the important part -- is how the teacher came by such a poor understanding of the science being taught in the first place.
its only a little joke dude. i love your long text responses really dedicated person xD
...on a silly matter, I know, and it's a funny sketch too. Perhaps if every member had your respect for science and scholarship, Popoo, I wouldn't fret.

just question what is your job as a scientist?
As one ages, one's work can change. When I started as a young scientist, I worked on trying to make computers reproduce the ideas of great philosophers and mathematicians, and perhaps come up with some ideas of their own. Then I did some work in Virtual Reality trying to get it to work for business and not just entertainment; and some work on detecting black hole detection, insurance scams and tax fraud (it turns out that black holes in physics and finance work in similar ways. :D) Eventually I started consulting to government on how best to gather, manage and analyse information to make better decisions (not surveillance: more things like what happens if there's a plague, or knowing how well students are doing, or what foreign aid is most successful.) Nowadays I don't teach so much, or do scientific research. Mostly what I do is run my company, write fiction, produce music, read history and science, and if I can, I try and help with critical thought. :)
