The Catholic church has done a lot of damage with its very sick doctrines, purgatory, hell-fire, not permitting contraception. Whilst of course not all priests were paedophiles a significant number are/were. The Catholic Church covered up their crimes rather than handing the scum over to the police! Then there were the disgusting Magdalene Laundries where unmarried pregnant girls were sent to be abused by the nuns running them. Quite a number of people who have attended Catholic schools talk of the cruelty they received at the hands of those in charge.

Other faiths aren't blameless either, but the Catholic Church seems to be the leader of the pack where abuse is concerned.

Do present day Catholics feel any unease about the crimes of the past, and some which continue in the present day?

And who could forget the disgusting rule of the Borgias and the support of the Nazi party?

Civilisation will be that much better off when Catholicism is finally wiped off the face of the Earth, never, ever to return again.

To answer your question, as I Catholic, no I don't feel any unease... especially since more protestant pastors are guilty of sexual abuse than Catholic priests in the USA. Basically, we shouldn't be surprised to find sinners in any group of people.
If that was the only issue, then vote moderation could be avoided more often, since a vote in which the voter does explain sufficiently how at least one point a debater made swung their vote, would be considered sufficient. -Airmax

I think there is crime and corruption in any institution. But yes the Catholic Church continues to perpetuate. The biggest crime is keeping people away from their souls. They insist the soul is part of us but we are not a part of it, thus discouraging people away from God and closing the door to their connection with their own divinity. The consequences are an unconscious lack of self-worth. No one can feel good enough about themselves because the soul is the source of infinite, eternal and unconditional self-worth for which we all long. The effects on humanity are unnecessary murder, violence, warfare, self-hatred, inequality all because of a simple misunderstanding. The scriptures have been misinterpreted to be literal when they are symbolic. The soul is born pure of a virgin, miraculous, rejected and buried yet still lives. Without it we are doomed as can be seen throughout recorded history. The effects of killing each other have been playing for so long that we think it's normal after a while. I'm here to say it isn't. We need to wake up and smell the coffee.
