Hussain ibn Ali was a 7th century revolutionary leader who made the ultimate sacrifice for social justice in the face of corruption and tyranny. He gave everything he had, including his life, for the honour of those around him.

Hussain ibn Ali was born in 620 AD to a family famed for their values of love, honour and peace. Raised by his grandfather Muhammad (the last prophet of Islam), Hussain was known for his integrity, generosity of spirit and blindness to colour and social class. It was for this reason that people flocked to him and his family.

Hussain was a man of integrity and honour.

Despite cultural expectations of him as a "prince" of his tribe and a prominent figure in the Islamic Empire, Hussain would shun the grandeur of his status in favour of breaking bread with the poor and needy. He broke all cultural moulds, brought people together and helped where he could.

Not long after the passing of Muhammad, the leadership of the vast Islamic Empire had fallen into the hands of the corrupt. The good values that Muhammad had spent his life instilling into society was slowly eradicated as the new ruler, Yazid, from the Ummayad dynasty was determined to gain complete control.

Hussain made a stand for social justice.

Hussain witnessed the basic rights and dignity of his people being violated, and good values from his society being drained. Yazid ruled with an iron fist, and demanded Hussain pay him allegiance to lend credibility to his own rule.

Hussain had to make a decision" Should he give his oath of allegiance to a tyrant " and stand aside as the people were being oppressed? Or make a stand and risk his own life? The timeless words of his grandfather Muhammad echoed in his heart, and Hussain knew what he had to do:

"The greatest stand is to speak the word of truth in the face of a tyrant."

Hussain made the ultimate sacrifice.

Hussain chose to stand against Yazid and was forced to leave his home city under the threat of assassination. Alongwith his family and companions, Hussain made his way towards the East seeking to gain support for his uprising and avoid any violence. It was on this journey Hussain, his family and companions were forced to stop by an army of over 30,000, on the hot plains of a land called Karbala.

In 680 AD, after three days of no water and food in the scorching heat, Hussain stood and fell valiantly to defend those around him being oppressed and whilst standing for his principles. What makes Hussain"s stand extraordinary is that he chose to stand against a mammoth army despite having only 72 companions with him.

Hussain"s legacy continues to inspire.

Through this tragic end but heroic act of sacrifice, Hussain was ultimately victorious. His death became the catalyst for revolutionary change and led to the collapse of Yazid"s tyrannic rule. Hussain stood by his principles till the very end, and his legacy continues to inspire millions around the world.

From civil rights leaders to volunteers at local charities " people across the world are inspired by his selflessness, courage and determination. The story of Hussain ibn Ali stands as an inspiration to all, no matter what colour or creed.

There appears to be a cultural tendency in Islam for extreme verbosity and assuming people will want to read long, contextless sales pitches. Everyone else - Christian, atheist, whatever - asks questions, makes arguments and tries to engage. But with many Muslim posters, it's more BAM! Have 15 paragraphs of non sequitur Islam.

It's a cultural trend I find quite bemusing.

That would be about the time Muslims conquered and slaughtered millions, thus building the Islamic Empire on their blood and bones.

On blood, bones, enslavement and immense cruelty, of most Muslim empires in the Middle East and of course the Ottoman empire, responsible for the murder of over a million Christian Armenians. I also know about the slaughter and starvation of about 200,000 people in East Timor by that bastion of Muslim righteousness, Indonesia.

Yes, that is how empires are made.

not necessarily. Islamic empire during the time of Muhammad was built of equality and passion. he came during a time that killing and pillaging was a norm in the society of Arabia and women had such a low place in the society that some people would bury their newborn baby daughters alive in order to save themselves from the shame of humiliation, if they were defeated in battle and those women were captured by enemy and used by them.

Quran:
When one of them is brought the news of a female [newborn], his face becomes darkened, and he chokes with suppressed agony.

but, after just a few years, Muhammad made those hostile tribes (that hostility among some of them went back 100 years) so kind to each other that they were willing to give what they needed for themselves to others, even though they were not Muslims.

Quran:
For the love of Him (Allah), they feed the needy, the orphan and the prisoner (which were not from believers)
[saying,] "We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We desire no reward from you, nor thanks.

[They are as well] for those who were settled in the land and [abided] in faith before them, who love those who migrate toward them, and do not find in their breasts any privation for that which is given to them, but prefer [the Immigrants] to themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And those who are saved from their own greed"it is they who are the felicitous.

excuses excuses. just accept the fact that your government has been oppressive and is the real cause of all this war and bloodshed that we see today. if you didn't create ISIS, why are your allies supporting it so much and why is it that they are roaming freely under the eyes of your so called coalition?

actually the people who really despise all of these totalitarian regimes is us real Muslims. all those royal families that are robbing their people in the name of Islam, all those Saudi families (who've named the country after their family name, as if it's theirs for all eternity) or Āl Khalīfah or any other totalitarian regime ruling over Muslim people. they are not Muslim. they even caused the death of more than 4000 people in hajj last year, only to prevent our missionaries from spreading true teachings of Islam to other people who don't have access to those materials. though the people are getting uneasy with them and it's just a matter of time before they rebel against them, if God wills it.

search "sheikh nimr" to see the real face of Saudi regime.

That would be about the time Muslims conquered and slaughtered millions, thus building the Islamic Empire on their blood and bones.

on blood and bones? like US empire?

On blood, bones, enslavement and immense cruelty, of most Muslim empires in the Middle East and of course the Ottoman empire, responsible for the murder of over a million Christian Armenians. I also know about the slaughter and starvation of about 200,000 people in East Timor by that bastion of Muslim righteousness, Indonesia.

that is somewhat true and somewhat false.
in this topic we're talking about Hussain, who fought against these kind of injustice in the society and was willing to sacrifice all he had in order to show their ugly face to the people.

do you know that during the battle of Karbala, those people even killed Hussain's 6 month old son (Ali Asghar) and Ghasim who was only 11 years old? they even caused the 3-4 year-old daughter of Hussain to die after the battle of karbala by beating and whipping her.

the same thing is happening in Yemen and Gaza strip right now, and by the allies of US. and Yemeni children are killed by Saudi and Israeli fighter planes and bombardments.

I am no defender of the U.S. or anyone, including Palestinians or Israelis or anyone, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu or ateist killing any children. Just don't be one sided. Many suicide bombs in the name of Islam have killed innocent children and other innocents, as have many American cruise missles. I am disgusted with the Americans and what they did to Iraq,. As much as I despise the dictators and so called royal families of so many Islamic countries, I also despise people like george Bush and Chaney and Rumsfeld. What you have to realize is that your religion needs major reform and updating into the modern world. In addition, it needs to get rid of its aribic centric ways. God doesn't care about the Arab language one way or another. Any religion that favours one language over all others is not of God.

actually the people who really despise all of these totalitarian regimes is us real Muslims. all those royal families that are robbing their people in the name of Islam, all those Saudi families (who've named the country after their family name, as if it's theirs for all eternity) or Āl Khalīfah or any other totalitarian regime ruling over Muslim people. they are not Muslim. they even caused the death of more than 4000 people in hajj last year, only to prevent our missionaries from spreading true teachings of Islam to other people who don't have access to those materials. though the people are getting uneasy with them and it's just a matter of time before they rebel against them, if God wills it.

search "sheikh nimr" to see the real face of Saudi regime.

Why then do so many of you blame the west for all of your problems in Muslim countries. the U.S. and Britain are not responsible for all failed Muslim states. Yes, they have meddled but Muslims must take full responsibility for the state of your lives and countries. You can't say that all the bad muslims are not Muslims. Mohamed did many vile things and he was the founder of your religion. isis does vile despicable things in the name of Islam.
