The Arbaeen Pilgrimage is the largest gathering that is held every year. It is held at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual for the commemoration of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Hossein ibn Ali's Martyrdom in 680.

Hussain ibn Ali was a 7th century revolutionary leader who made a stand against Yazid ibn Muawiyah. Yazid was a tyrannical ruler who had illegally usurped power and was violating the basic rights and dignity of the people. Yazid wanted Hussain to pay allegiance to him, to lend credibility to his own corrupt rule. However Hussain refused to do so, based on his moral values and principles, and was killed by an army of over 30,000 whilst standing with a small number of 72.

Over 20 million people from 40 countries of the world participate in this occasion, making it the second largest gathering in the world. The figure reaches 22 million pilgrims according to Iraqi state-run media in 2015.

Many make the pilgrimage on foot from Najaf, a journey of 80km which can take days. Some walked from as far as Basra in southern Iraq, a journey of nearly 700km. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims came from neighbouring Iran; a journey that takes about a month on foot. Although Arbaeen is a Shia ritual, some Sunni Muslims and people from other religions such as Christianity and Zoroastrianism also made the pilgrimage.

Along the 80km stretch from Najaf to Karbala volunteers distribute free food and drinks to those undertaking the pilgrimage, as well as offering places to relax, wash and sleep. Arbaeen Day is now the largest annual peaceful gathering in the world, with numbers set to increase significantly every year. this is a journey of sacrifice and human values, and pilgrims from other countries and people of Iraq work hand in hand in providing for those who participate in this journey.

Arbaeen should be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in several categories. The biggest annual gathering, longest continuous dining table, largest number of people fed for free, largest group of volunteers serving a single event, all under the imminent threat of suicide bombings.

I wonder if there are any non-Muslim suicide bombers threatening them?

only a person like you who only thinks about his stomach and what's below it (or not) would think of it that way.

this is the largest group of selfless people who are gathered together to oppose tyranny and oppression. their pure love for Hussain is moving these people and is showing to the world that we Muslims are ready and are not afraid of going through hardships to defend our religion and our Imam.

and this is also Muslims' answer to your ISIS.

the only people who've died in Arbaeen as far as I know, were the victims of one car bombing and those who died in car accident (one incident as far as I know).
there's no such thing as stoning in Arbaeen.

Largest gathering of deluded beings .
Largest group of people chucking rocks.
Largest group of people gathering for absolutely nothing.
Largest group of superstitious people.
Largest group of people gathering for a free feed.
The best way of rounding up religious people for future. Reasons.
Largest number of religious people squashed to death trying to chuck rocks.
And many more.

why so angry?
only a person like you who only thinks about his stomach and what's below it (or not) would think of it that way.

this is the largest group of selfless people who are gathered together to oppose tyranny and oppression. their pure love for Hussain is moving these people and is showing to the world that we Muslims are ready and are not afraid of going through hardships to defend our religion and our Imam.

and this is also Muslims' answer to your ISIS.

I apologies seeker for any harm I caused to your post .
I like it and it's very educational. And extremely interesting.

When I heard about about this . What stood out was the number of deaths that occured , from people pushing in to throw stones at something . I'm sure
Next year's pilgrimage will be better organized

the only people who've died in Arbaeen as far as I know, were the victims of one car bombing and those who died in car accident (one incident as far as I know).
there's no such thing as stoning in Arbaeen.

they were killed. mecca was a place for us to promote Shia Islam during Hajj. Saudi regime doesn't want that. so, every couple of years they kill a number of Shia Muslims in Hajj to prevent Shias from attending Hajj. the incident you're referring to, is one of those incidents.

stoning or what other reason you've heard of, is just a mask to cover the real intent behind these slaughters.
