The new, highly touted compact fluorescent light bulbs are little environment-killers in a package! While we don't know global warming is real, we know that mercury is a poison! Stand up for your rights to have real light bulbs!

Also, when you stop and consider that 1 of these lightbulbs has about 1/100 the mercury that an old fashion mercury themometer had and we managed to survive those (though looking back now, I can't see how).

Mercury is in coal. ^_^.

Who is taking away the right to incandescents?

Australia.

Though some are working ways around it be selling incandescents as "personal space heaters," lol.

Agreed, or, better yet (since they serve a purpose that a small compact car can't), lets require fuel efficiency standards.

That was a funny attempt at being scientific, before it wasted into a really pathetic attempt to smear CFL's.

"The heat generation is actually desirable for about 9 months of the year in the northern states and Canada because it means the main heat source in the home does not have to work as hard."

Since a standard 60 watt bulb (incandescent) wastes about 25 watts to heat (rather than light). The 3 bulbs in my living room only generate about 75 watts of heat, compared to a small personally heater which runs around 1,000 - 2,000 (the one under my desk at work is 1,300). And to heat my living room, the heating system uses around 8,000 watts, so I'm looking at less than 1% help for my heater (and since the light bulbs are at the ceiling, their heat is not going to be helping me down at ground level).

"According to Environment Canada, the Hg content varies from 1 to 25 mg per bulb. There are about 115 million American households."

The home bulbs (that are designed to replace 40w 60w 75w, 100w bulbs) only have about 3 - 4 mg. That's about the same amount of mercury in 75 cans of tuna. Or 24 servings of shark (which has a .988 ppm mercury level in their body).

FYI, a great white shark has the mercury content of about 800 CFL bulbs in its body by the time it is fully grown.

The larger bulbs are for wharehouses, where they are replacing much larger bulbs, and so wouldn't be found in your everyday house. And the idea that improper disposal would happen is obvious, but the same argument can be made for batteries, which are suppose to be disposed of in a particular manner, but the environment isn't crumbling because of that.

Yes, these bulbs have less mercury than the old thermometers. But how many of those were in a house? And how many bulbs per house? And how many thermometers get broken? And how many people even know what to do with these bulbs? Exactly.

How about all the energy that will be wasted when you have to air out your house for several hours and turn off your H&AC system, then have to reheat your house?

1 thermometer = 125 CFL bulbs.

They used to break all the time trust me, I am old enough to remember.

Lets ban central heating units too, they are inefficient compared to space heaters.

Let's start by requiring all trucks to be 20% more fuel efficient than the same model was 10 years ago.

So if a 2002 ranger got 15 mpg, a 2012 would need to get 18 mpg. And work our way up.

We have the technology, its just that (as with all technology) it is expensive in its 1st gen form and will take a few years to come down in price.

or is it just your value judgement that 20% has the best cost-benefit ratio?

If the bulbs really are better for one's home, wouldn't people switch over to them voluntarily? Why restrict people's freedom?

There's a problem with that kind of legislation. If a car has an initially low mpg, then the company doesn't have to try as hard to improve its mileage, thus incentivizing low mileage.
