1. 26,000 light years from earth and in the center of our galaxy.
2. The gas around the back hole is emitting xray thus why can see it.
3. It is very hot gas captured from near by stars, but is not in the event horizon where it would be the point of no return by being absorbed into the black hole.
4. Black holes have an accretion disk where matter gets ejected back out of the gravitational hold of the black hole. It is a myth that all matter gets sucked in. That is only true if it passes the event horizon.
5. They are still trying to understand the dynamics of how matter gets thrown out of the gravitational hold of the black hole and how matter gets pulled into the event horizon.

cool stuff

Picture of giant amounts of gas being blown out of a galaxy near the speed of light due to a black hole. It is a common misconception that a black holes gobble everything up. The recent observations of our Milky Way black hole suggest only 1 % matter around it falls into it. Amazing considering it is 4 million times the mass of our sun.
