I did this a little bit in a thread about Avatar, the Last Airbender in the misc. section, but let's do it more. Time to delve deeply into the science of a cartoon and video game meant for kids.

First, let's look at Machamp, and some descriptions given in the pokedex.

Yellow
One arm alone can move mountains. Using all four arms, this Pok"mon fires off awesome punches.

FireRed
Its four ruggedly developed arms can launch a flurry of 1,000 punches in just two seconds.

It is about 1.6 meters tall.

The average height of a mountain is 4000 meters.

http://wiki.answers.com...

The average mass of a mountain is 2700 kg per cubic meter. You'll need to estimate the radius of the mountain's base, and probably calculate it as a cone.

Let's try to find the theoretical force, kinetic energy, and momentum behind each punch that Machamp makes, assuming mountains are being thrown at it. Go!

Also, what are the impacts of having Magcargos in the world, who have a body temperature of 18000 degrees fahrenheit, almost twice that of the sun?

Sapphire Pokedex: Magcargo's body temperature is approximately 18,000 degrees F. Water is vaporized on contact. If this Pok"mon is caught in the rain, the raindrops instantly turn into steam, cloaking the area in a thick fog.

Formula for a cone is (1/3)pi(r^2)h

The creators of Pokemon don't know Physics. Also, I'm pretty sure a lot of the descriptive stuff is hyperbole.

The average height of a mountain is 4000 meters, and I estimated the radius at 1500 meters. Using the cone volume formula, I approximated the volume of the average mountain at 9,424,777,961 cubic meters. One cubic meter of a mountain will have a mass of around 2700 kilograms, so I found the mass of this average mountain to be 2.5447*10^13 kilograms.

Now, a Machamp has an average height of 1.6 meters, and given that a wingspan is roughly equal to height, I estimated his arm length to be about .6 meters (subtracting out chest half-width). For each punch, his arm is moving forwards to full extension, and then backwards to the starting point and about .2 meters more. So that leaves me with 1.4 as the rough estimation of the distance traveled by his arm, and then 1/125 of a second as the time taken to do so (500/4=125 punches per second from one arm). Using the kinetic energy formula, this leaves just one punch from a Machamp at 3.8966*10^17 joules of energy, which is worth about 93130302.94 tons of TNT. Apparently, he can do 500 of those per second.

This must be a new meaning to the word approximated! How many significant figures do you use when you are being accurate?

I guess that you're right that I should run through this whole thing again and use significant figures for the right amount of precision, and I'll do that. What I meant by approximate though was that a mountain doesn't fit a cone perfectly, it's just that a cone was the closest calculation to accurate.

Why are you precluding poetic language in the descriptions?
To "move" a mountain, all he really needs to do is keep punching and destroy it. You just need to calculate the strength required to shatter rock.
