1 in 4 people in the United States are "convinced" the sun revolves around the earth. That means "statistically" 1 out of every 2 people who believe in evolution also believe the sun revolves around the earth.

The sun does revolve around the earth.

It's just as true that the earth revolves around the sun.

You know, I've lived in the United States long enough to be pretty sure that all of these "one in a number under ten of Americans don't know this obvious piece of information" is a bunch of crap.

I mean, are they asking a whole much of super-right-winged-rednecks and acting like it's a perfect representation of the United States, or what?

1. I would trust that source with my life.
2. Statistically, it would still mean that only 1/4 of evolutionists believe the sun revolves around the earth, as with any other demographic.

Ya, your right, only a quarter of evolutionists believe the sun revolves around the earth based on these statistics. I bet it makes people who study evolution feel like it's a complete waste of their time given a 1/4 of the population is "CONVINCED" the sun revolves around the earth.

Technically the earth and the sun orbit around a common center of mass, called a "barycenter". However, this point is still deep inside the sun.

It's calling 2,200 people representative of over 300 million people. That isn't bigotry, that's just pointing out that it's a very blunt use of over-generalization.

Also, I like how you disregard what I say without a shred of evidence as well. Aren't you just a textbook example of a hypocrite? You jump to the conclusion that I am somehow indoctrinated (which makes no sense anyways) and disregard what I said without a shred of evidence by ironically enough, stating that I disregarding something without a shred of evidence.

If you are done with the hypocrisy and ad hominem, I'd like to have a real discussion on the topic.

"I mean", are they asking a whole bunch of super-right-winged-rednecks. What do you mean by "I mean"? Your assumption that rednecks are all right wing is a product of indoctrination. So you reject the source because of the number of people surveyed. Then I shall be correct in rejecting any poll on this site that uses the same number or less people in it's sampling for any given topic. I shall quote you directly should anyone give me flack for rejecting their poll that doesn't measure up to the 2200 standard. Thank you for you insight on what number of people is required for a poll to be used as a source.

This is a survey of 2200 people total. I personally feel like it is an insufficient sample to extrapolate to nearly 4 million. On top of that, too little information is given about the demographics of the survey.

You're forgetting that believing, "the Sun goes around the Earth", and believing, "Evolution is wrong", are both caused by a lack of science education and, therefore, are not independent variables.

You are forgetting that people think the sun orbits the earth. Lots and lots of people, way way way more than a percentage of 2200 people. The largest margin of error would put it into the millions. If both are taught poorly then no one should be ridiculed for not believing either, especially by those in charge of and graduates of academia. It is their fault this is the case. It is an indictment of education in the United States.

There's quite a lot wrong with believing that the sun revolves around the Earth. For starters, no matter where you center for the universe, the sun cannot revolve around the Earth. When you consider an isolated system consisting just of the sun and the Earth, because the sun is so much more massive than the Earth, it only makes sense that the Earth revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit, which it does. When you add the rest of the universe, you get the distortions in orbits of other bodies, but the fact is that the sun still revolves around the Earth.

I would assume those who have gotten that far in science class as to be studying evolution would already have gotten to knowing our basic solar arrangement.

Not really. If you weighed one gram and I put you on a string and whipped you around me in circles, there would be very little relativity in our engagement. That's basically what's happening with the Sun and Earth... They have relative frames of reference, but the orbit is clearly absolute.

It's very simple.

You're forgetting parallax. Parallax is the property of having the Earth's view of the universe slightly changed as is goes around the sun. It's very existence proves that the Earth is moving, and revolves around the sun. The aberration of light because of the finite speed of light also shows that the Earth is moving. You can't simply define a reference point and processes change at that point without any sort of proof.

Just because an explanation isn't the most parsimonious one doesn't mean it's wrong.

The fact is, in relation to the earth, the sun orbits earth.

That's some interesting stuff, but I noticed you didn't disagree with me.

It's in the post if you'd actually read it.

You said the earth orbits the sun. You didn't disagree with me.

You said, "...in relation to the earth, the sun orbits earth." I'm saying that there is no such relation where the sun revolves around the earth.
I'm becoming less defined as days go by, fading away, and well you might say, I'm losing focus, kinda drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself.
