July 14th, 2015, is the day it lands. What do you think we'll find? http://www.nasa.gov...

If the sky's the limit then why do we have footprints on the Moon? I'm shooting my aspirations for the stars.

From what I understand of Pluto's orbit, it look like NH will see some atmosphere on Pluto. That will be awesome!

I have been following this for a long time now :-)

#excited

This is the first time a probe of ours has visited a KBO, and an Icy Dwarf planet. It's a completely different class of planet to what we are already familiar with (Terestial Rocky planets & Gas Giants).

We want to know about it's atmospheric composition, morphology, thermal activity (if any exists), which will tell is about how it formed, and what other objects of the like would be like. Also numerous outstanding questions such as the source of the organic compounds that seeded life on Earth, source of Earth's water etc may be answered here.

We have no idea what kind of chemistry is possible on such a cold, rocky planet. it may be just methane, and hydrogen cyanide, or maybe something more interesting. Does it harvest large quantities of water? Will it become inhabitable at some point in the future?

Also interestingly it's the first object we will visit that we have known about for less time than it's orbital period, heh.

You made me go and look up the orbital period of Pluto. :-)
