In composed an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of historical accounts of flying snakes in this thread in the History forum:
I was trying to figure out what these could mean. I was thinking modern "flying" (gliding) snakes were confused with hooded cobras, where the hoods might have been confused for wings. But Josephus' account describes the snakes flying away from birds, and the birds flying after them and catching them in the air, and the location seems to be a desert where the gliding snakes couldn't find any trees to glide from. So the gliding snake theory doesn't seem to be consistent with all the stories.
Another thing that peaks my curiosity is all the accounts (such as Marco Polo and many Medieval accounts and art) of large snakes with 2 legs. How did these stories originate?
