Does anyone know what its made out of and why it does this?

Ferrofluid is just tiny nodules of (usually) iron oxide, coated with something to keep them from clumping together, suspended in water or another solvent. The fluid becomes magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field.

In that video, notice that the skull is metal. It's probably connected to an electromagnet, which is being powered up and down.

You can get a ferrofluid lava lamp, or even make some ferrofluid yourself. Be warned though, it's messy. Think motor oil messy.

wtf I want this

It's not hard to make or get.

It's cheap too.

It is messy.

And I think the cooledt properties of it is it'suse as a shear reducing fluid.
