I want to do something meaningful before I become inactive again, so I decided to start this.

Among the general public, there's a lot of misunderstanding about linguistics as a subject, be it its goals (of which there are many, although the outsider knows at most one or two of them) or its methods. Last Info Day , quite a few high school students came to our booth thinking we were Modern Languages, which highlights the ignorance of the public about the discipline.

I'm not expecting a lot of questions, nor can I guarantee to be able to answer all of the questions raised (I definitely won't be able to answer after April commences). Also, feel free to argue against any answers I give, as long as you do this in a constructive manner.

So ask away!
The thing is, I hate relativism. I hate relativism more than I hate everything else, excepting, maybe, fibreglass powerboats... What it overlooks, to put it briefly and crudely, is the fixed structure of human nature. - Jerry Fodor
