It's so rare that we actually acknowledge this! It's great that John Oliver was able to discuss this and let it spread to a wide audience through his presence.

It's fairly shocking that science gets distorted this much by the media. If they have any science to present in the news, it should at least be reviewed by someone with qualifications in relevant fields.
