Ignoring paying for education, job availability etc, what sort of Scientist would you like to be?

I do like the idea of field work tremendously, however, if I had the smarts enough I would be in particle physics, astrophysist, or neursoscience.

I liked the discipline I took at the time. However if I were commencing a science career today, I think the most interesting fields are microbiology, genetics, and materials science.

But on a parallel matter, world-wide the demand for good engineers has never been higher, so if you wanted to do a STEM career without being a scientist you could pick up pretty much any engineering degree and find interesting work in the global market.

(At the moment, I'm fascinated by acoustic engineering, but that's just my musical interests meeting my love of submarine games. :D)

Electro- physicist, exploring and innovative ways to apply electricity and magnetism. My first undertaking would be electricity and the human body to include levitation, permeability, conductance, basically see if a real life magneto is a practicle possibility.

human levitation would require a magnet roughly the size of a small moon!...

Which I don't deny. It's just a video related to something she is interested in.

Yes to both. A colleague of one of my professors was once contacted by some kind of cult offering 1 million Euro for a device able to levitate their leader. What they didn't know is that the magnet from the video is FAR more expensive and can only levitate a frog (or maybe something a little bigger than that). To levitate a human, the magnet would have to be gigantic. Not exactly practical.

Zoologist/Ecologist all the way for me!

I have a few that I think wold be interesting:
Geologist, paleontologist, glaciologist, or oceanographer.

I've been looking for an aspiring geologist, do you believe the official explanation for what devils tower is?

Seeing as how I was not familiar with "Devil's tower" until you mentioned it, I think it is safe to say I do not agree/disagree with the consensus (whatever it is). ;-)

it was the star of a major motion picture!
and this is the explanation https://www.nps.gov...

There are multiple theories listed. It doesnt seem that there is an 'official explanation'.

we've got a theory too

So...you think it used to be a massive tree?

well it's not a lava formation

there's a lot more, interested?

Why do you think it is not a lava formation? If it is a tree, why are there no rings or internal structures like...a tree? (what part of a tree is hexagonal!?) Why is this 'ancient tree' not petrified with silica like most petrified wood? These are just a few of the questions that come to mind...

Also, you didn't answer my other question - who is "we"?

Does it look like lava formation? Does lava flow from above, rapidly cooling into perfectly straight hexagonal columns before it hits the ground?

These hexagons can be found in plants everywhere, down to even the cell's structure. Take a look at the ground around devil's tower, the rings and bark may have fallen off of the structure at one point.

Mine too, of course, the discovery is fairly new, and it is going to need more research, which will need funding, which, because of its nature, will not come from government. But it definitely looks like a big stump, and currently, it's the most plausible explanation that I can find.

That's so horribly awesome! that poor frog though....

OMG a cult! that's really crazy, lol. Kind of reminds me of how everyone was freaking out about a human sacrifice performed at CERN's Shiva shrine.

But, yeah sometimes my imagination gets ahead of reality, watching "X-men" and "Stranger Things" makes me wonder. I'm an electrician and I've worked mostly on electro-hydraulic systems and controls. And I'm fully aware that human body can conduct and transfer electricity, I'm aware that there are solid state devices that operate on super low voltages as low as 3Volts, I've witnessed lighting fluorescent bulbs with human fingertips and a meggar. I wonder if those boundaries can be pushed sometimes. I'm also interested in advancing bio-electronics and artificial prosthetics as well.

Does it look like lava formation? Does lava flow from above, rapidly cooling into perfectly straight hexagonal columns before it hits the ground?

That's not what geologists are saying from what I see. They are suggesting it was an area where magma intruded into an underground area and erosion has uncovered this formation.

These hexagons can be found in plants everywhere, down to even the cell's structure. Take a look at the ground around devil's tower, the rings and bark may have fallen off of the structure at one point.

Rings don't fall off of trees. You could of said some petrified wood doesn't have rings and I would of accepted that as reasonable, but suggesting they "fell off" is ignorance. Additionally, if the hexagons were part of a tree they would need to be much smaller to serve any useful purpose.

Yea, most pseudoscience finds little support from those interested in real answers.

An 80 minute video to say,"flat earthers" is nothing more than entertainment to me. Out of respect for the OP, I will bow out of this off topic convo. Feel free to start an OP of your own and I may contribute.
