1/6/2011 5:00:46 AM Posted: 7 years ago I've always been under the impression that the ratio of how much is communicated by a person was something like 10% verbal, 90% non-verbal.
Is there any science behind this? I'm curious. |

1/6/2011 6:48:56 AM Posted: 7 years ago In Bill Bryson's book The Mother Tongue he states that there are approximately 700 non-verbal expressions used by English-speakers; that is to say actions such as cupping the ear, shrugging the shoulders, giving a thumbs-up, etc.
However, that's very few compared to less expressive languages than English which can have many thousands of quite complex non-verbal expressions. For example, in Greece if someone seated leans their elbow on their left leg, squints with one eye and holds one hand to his brow it means "leave me out of this, I don't want top get involved". 1/6/2011 12:13:28 PM Posted: 7 years ago The nonverbal-verbal communication ratio is something like 70-30, last I checked.
People trust nonverbal communication more than they do verbal. Although there are something like 700 thou to a million words in the English language at any one time, most English speakers have a 1k word vocabulary. However, there is far more than a million nonverbal ways to convey concepts, whether in writing or another analogous symbol-based inscription, the conveyance of these symbols (air-quotes, the index finger and thumb "L," etc.), sign-language, as an accompaniment to speaking, flirtations, suggestions, and subconscious signals. Nonverbal communication is conveyed throughout the entire body. What you do with your eyes, eyelids, hair, arms, fingers, feet, toes, legs, torso, hips, every single thing you do sends a message to other people. Even nothing at all conveys a message--it is immediately noticeable and, in someone who is supposed to be conscious, is quite unnerving. |

1/6/2011 7:18:00 PM Posted: 7 years ago There's a stated 50-55 split based on research a few decades old - as far as I know it's treated largely as an outdated concept.
