Yet another thread with yet another link to yet another youttube video of yet another brain dead moron claiming yet another hoax polluting the Science forum. Gee thanks, that's just what this forum needed.

from what I have learned major issue is being able to protect the occupants from the radiation for that long of a trip, once they work that out, it can be done, but right now the weight for the added shielding makes it too risky, so it is possible but would be a death sentence.

Kevin there are 2 more issues which are just if not more fundamental: energy and Time. Humans cannot survive away from mother earth for very long, and the energy required for going anywhere much farther than the outer atmosphere takes a tremendous amounts of energy. There does not seem to be even a theoretical solution to these problems yet. This is why, despite dramatic technological achievements, we have gone literally nowhere in the last 50 years since the moon landing.

well NASA seems to think radiation is the first issue to tackle, but I haven't looked into a whole lot

Can people go to Mars? Cucinotta believes so. But first, "we've got to figure out how much radiation our bodies can handle and what kind of spaceship we need to build." In labs around the country, the work has already begun.

When the first civilian goes, I'll eat a dead bum's underwear.

But, why would a civilian want to go to Mars?

I can understand wanting to see the Earth from leo and maybe even a trip to the moon would be cool. But, to such an extreme expense just to spend three years of your life traveling there and back merely to stand on a barren wasteland in a space suit and do ... what exactly?

Surely, only the most dedicated, focused and courageous of scientists would make such a sacrifice for the sake of increasing our understanding of the universe.

Of course, there's always some guy with boatloads of money who might do something that crazy. I hope it's soon, I met this bum the other day, says he didn't have long to live.

That's different, they want to actually create a colony on Mars and live there.

What do you usually take as a side dish with your dead bums underwear?

Crack who're crabs in a nice swampwater soup.

I never said anything about coming back, it's like you are arguing with yourself. How does "When the first civilian goes, I'll eat a dead bum's underwear." even remotely suggest this? Brain dead moron indeed. I give up on you Dan. And I feel sorry for anyone you disagree with in your personal life. I'm guessing you are divorced.

And, you would guessing wrong, as usual. Yes, you are a brain dead moron, there is no guessing to that fact. You show it with every post you make here, it is astonishingly mind boggling that anyone could be so brain dead but you somehow manage to rise to the occasion.

What do you usually take as a side dish with your dead bums underwear?

Crack who're crabs in a nice swampwater soup.

I can't see the video. Can you summarise it in a sentence?

In breaking news:

http://www.abc.net.au...

SpaceX chief Elon Musk has unveiled his ambitious plan to build a human colony on Mars, using a massive rocket and a fleet of spaceships to achieve a self-sustaining population on the Red Planet this century.

Speaking at the International Astronautical Congress in the western Mexican city of Guadalajara, Mr Musk showed a futuristic video depicting his ideas for an interplanetary transport system based on reusable rockets, a propellant farm on Mars and 1,000 spaceships on orbit, carrying about 100 people each.

SpaceX plans to send an unmanned Dragon cargo capsule to Mars as early as 2018, paving the way for a human mission that would leave Earth in 2024 and arrive on the Red Planet the following year.

In other breaking news, underwear mysteriously vanishes from a dead bum's body.

Do you have a telescope? Have you ever been to an observatory before? You can actually see the moon landing site and if you look at mars you can track the curiosity rover.

...with your own eyes.

Why would you believe that we can't rocket ourselves to mars when we can easily put satellites and stations in space and send probes beyond the solar system?

Um... Even if you aimed the Hubble telescope at the moon, you wouldn't be able to see the flag there. The rover is also too small. What is it that you are actually looking at through the telescope?

I wouldn't say any of that is easy. It takes large amounts of energy and Time to do these things. We've done squat in like 50 years...
