The original Australians have now been shown to have arrived on the continent nearly 50,000 years ago and co-existed with giant marsupials which are now extinct:

http://www.abc.net.au...

Working with the Adnyamathanha people over the past nine years, Mr Hamm and colleagues recovered from the one-metre-deep excavations around 4,300 artefacts and 200 bone fragments from 16 mammals and one reptile.

Importantly dating of the artefacts and fossil finds show humans occupied the site from 49,000 to 46,000 years ago.

This is a hoax, don't believe it, Australia doesn"t really exist.

Australia was the name of a fictional continent invented by Plato, but it was allegorical, an imagined country that had unbridled growth until it engulfed an entire continent. The giant sharks, giant pythons, spiders, huge flies, poisonous centipedes, wallabies, flying foxes, dingoes, giant crocodiles, it was all just a metaphor for the horrors of a big government growing out of control.

Despite its completely metaphorical nature in Plato's work, it has maintained itself in the public imagination for centuries, having considerable impact on literature, art, music, and especially film makers and Internet tricksters. Because of this, many people have come to believe it is a real place, but that is only due to the tendency for gullible people to literalize legends, metaphor, and myth, causing them to engage in pseudoscientific speculation and fantasy. If you investigate it seriously, you find that nobody is really from Australia, but many people claim to "know a guy" or "have a friend" that either visited or lived there, but nobody has actually been there themselves. Over the years it's become one of the most popular forms of modern folklore, having its existence in urban legends, wives tales, and "put ons" for gullible people"s benefit, much like the legendary Snipe, Jackalope, and Big Foot. Today the so called "existence" of Australia is all in good fun and most people are glad to "play along" with a nod and a wink.

You know, you almost had me convinced. Then I remembered that I live in Sydney. :-)

It's odd that the Aboriginals were in Australia that long ago, yet never made the trip over to New Zealand and settled there (To the best of my knowledge).

They weren't ocean going. It is believed they crossed over from Asia when there was a land bridge.

Bear in mind that NZ is 2,000 kilometeres away. As a point of comparison Madagascar is closer than that to Africa where homo sapiens originated yet it wasn't settled until only about 2,000 years ago.

The Maori (First people in here in NZ) managed to reach here from east Polynesia in the early 13th century, which is a significantly greater distance to travel.

Yes, but they came from an island people with an ocean travelling culture, that is the difference. The indigenous Australians lived mainly inland with some along the coasts but they never had any need for more than simple canoes for fishing. Also, population pressures were not great on a continent the size of Australia. Much of the islander people exploration drive came from population pressure and the consequent shortage of food and water resources.
