(The title was a bit of an exaggeration of course)

Most people hate authority. Some people don't like the government having so much power of them and telling them what to do. Others don't like corporations having so much power over them and telling them what to do.

They can hate either one. What they hate determines whether they are a capitalist or a socialist.

I always assumed the opposite, that people secretly like authority. That's why conservatives are against the government, since they see their authority in god while progressives see authority in government

I would agree with darkkermit. I think most people like authority. When you submit to an authority figure it releases you of responsibility. (see Stanley Milgram experiment.)

I wouldn't look at it as which kind of authority they hate, but which kind of authority they prefer.

People of all ideologies hate authority? Rubbish! Read social scientist Bob Altemeyer's work on the underlying authoritarian psychology of conservatives. Or, read Conservatives Without Conscience by John Dean (a conservative, btw), who also makes the case that conservatism for many is merely a guise for authoritarianism.
Yo, all of my subliterate conservative criticasters who find perusing and processing the sesquipedalian verbiage of my posts to be such a bothersome brain-taxing chore, I have a new nickname for you. Henceforth you shall be known as Pooh Bears. No, not for the obvious apt reasons, i.e., not because you're full of pooh, and not because of your ursine irritability. Rather, you put me in mind of an A.A. Milne quote, "I am a Bear of Very Little Brain, and long words bother me". Love ya, Pooh Bears.

Not all capitalists hate the government. See Reaganites, though they're admittedly not free market capitalists of course.
