Stealing is stealing. So whats your point ?

It's the way the police detained the family per se, and seriously, the child went to state custody? Unbelievable.

The point is discretion plays an extremely large and important role in criminal justice and, given the circumstances here the judgement of the office was decidedly poor.

You obviously are unaware that we are in a police state right now. Again, what is your point. This is happening all over the world.

The point is, that the arrest crossed a line, the way that the family was treated was too severe and idiotic. The cops probably didn't have a single 911 call that day.

My point is your statment implies an ignorance of police discretion. So I decided to educate you.

What is your point?

False. I understand that it was wrong. But the point is this. We are entering a very totalitarianism police state right now. The law enforcers have declared martial law on everybody and everything. Yes, this is true. Believe it or not.

Your statement implies otherwise. To say that "stealing is stealing" is to suggest that all instances of this crime are the same and should be treated equally. This notion is false. I cannot fathom an alternate interpretation of that statement. Perhaps you could enlighten us.

But the point is this. We are entering a very totalitarianism police state right now. The law enforcers have declared martial law on everybody and everything. Yes, this is true. Believe it or not.

THIEVES! Lock 'em up and throw away the key!

Seriously though, it was clearly a genuine mistake, they had just bought $50 of groceries.

You would think that the store concerned would just allow them to pay for it rather than calling the police.

Surely the negative publicity will cost them more than $2.50?

When I job shadowed a police officer, they arrested some teenager for stealing a piece of chicken from a buffet. The buffet gave them the option to pay for it, but that person spent the evening in jail instead.

That was pretty unambiguous though even before the option to pay was given (they snuck past the buffet payment in the first place), it appears to be a bad business decision to treat a probable mistake like this.
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.
