All though it is technically a discovery, I would have to say fire. Without it most [if not all] of our modern technology is impossible.

If you want to put it in invention form, you could say something that harnesses fire--like the torch (American version of the word).

fire

led to getting eaten less

led to cooking and thus most tasty foods

led to internal combustion engine

led to iron and steel production

I could see our control or harnessing of fire, but we didn't invent fire.

Just to be clear:

Fire is NOT an invention
Sex is NOT an invention (A sexual position can be an invention)

Well language is natural, but the best man made invention would either have to be a sewer or antibiotics. Anti biotics and sewers are actually the 2 things that have saved many lives. I also think vaccines help save lives to that would otherwise be threatened by certain desises, but sewers probably have saved the most lives total over another thing. How? by helping keep things with harmful desises caused by feces underground and away from the main population. In war antibiotics helped fight infection and other sickness, and vaccines prevent sickness. So
1. sewer
2. antibiotics
3. vaccines.

Fire occurs in nature - ergo, it is a discovery, not invention.

But IMO, greatest invention is, hands down, the printing press.

I agree with most of these, in the sense that they are important and essential for current human progress.

However, I believe that mankind's greatest invention to date is definitely the Internet.

I'm assuming you mean the 1's and 0's of a computer's binary logic. Of course, the 0 here is just an abstraction of that binary logic. The logic (and its physical electronic representation) is just as valid even if we do not represent it mathematically using a 0.

More than 700 million years ago two amoebas discovered how to swap their genes, i.e. sex.
