The Penn State situation is a microcosm of our society at large. Basically, knowledge of the rape of a 10 year old is insufficient to take action if this action will result in losing your job or standing in the community. This moral operant is all pervasive in our society. Very few of us, if any, have ever acted in such a way on the job to do the RIGHT thing and gotten fired, demoted or forced out.
In the US we test applicant for personality traits which make them compliant. We routinely do what our employer says, right or wrong. We will do whatever we mist to keep our job. Now we know that, at institutions once deemed to have standards higher than the minimum, the reality is most of us just follow the Law without regard for what is right or wrong.
Where is your actual line…not the one you hope you wouldn't cross?
