What will be the the currency of control that the "elites" hold over the "herd"?

Knowledge? Fashion? Genealogy?

What?

Hypotheticals are only useful if they are realistic. This one is neither. What we have experienced in the last couple decades is probably the closest to infinite and cheap energy that we will ever have. Energy is inherently limited and that only becomes more clear as technology progresses. In almost every facet of energy, from high-efficiency lightbulbs to solar collection to biological digestion, the only real answer that we have to success is to limit what we use as opposed to relying on innovation to save our souls from our greedy practices. This social lethargy is fueled by selfishness and ignorance as well as fantasy (futuristic sci-fi films where people have used technology to achieve utopia).

Not so. Just take into consideration nuclear fusion and you essentially have a near limitless energy source. The entirely of the universe is filled with energy.

Answer:

Knowledge.

Currently, knowledge is restricted to the "herd" because the herd is busy with trying to make ends meet, get enough food to eat, and so on.

In a world of infinite and cheap energy, I'm assuming all the basic human needs are met. What then is stopping the herd from gaining this knowledge?

How will the elite use it?

No, solar energy is essentially limitless, or at least it will last or a few billion more years. We now have the technology to put solar power station in space and beam the energy down via microwaves. That's been studied for decades, and the only real problem is cost. We have a hundred years or more of fossil fuels left, and a few thousand years of fission nuclear fuel. Fusion will probably come along in a hundred years or so.

I think this guy will speed up the process.

Knowledge? Fashion? Genealogy?

What?

Take a tip from Obama, the fact that the US has huge energy reserves doesn't mean that the government will choose to let people use them. Thanks to new technology in recovery from oil shale, the U.S. has a third to a half of the world's oil reserves -- but no problem, it's forbidden to develop them.

The elite controls by regulation, and anything can be made scarce by a government that wants to make it scarce.

It's not as If there isn't oil drilling in the US.
