When Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy made public his opinions on gay marriage, the fast food chain received an enormous amount of backlash from the LGBTQ community and its supporters. Meanwhile, however, they also received hefty support from both Christians and free speech advocates, most significantly on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

Yesterday, Chick-fil-A announced that they would discontinue their funding to anti-gay organizations such as Focus on the Family.

As a result, however, they are now receiving criticism from the other side, with those who formerly supported their stance on gay marriage accusing them of "giving in" to pro-gay marriage "bullies."

Do you think Chick-fil-A did the right thing by pulling their funding from anti-gay organizations? Voice your opinion in today's featured opinion topic here: http://www.debate.org...

From a pure, business perspective, it is monumentally idiotic to alienate a huge source of potential customers to make some cheap, political statement. Businesses should strive, whenever possible, to at least appear neutral on social or political issues.

Having said that, that corporation is well within its rights to do so, just as the people they alienated is well within their rights to boycott.

Despite my personal stance on the matter (marriage for consenting adults regardless of sexual orientation), who pissed me off the most were government institutions, like the mayors of Boston and San Fransisco, threatening to ban Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A CEO/CFO's were being douches, of course, but they're allowed to. When government officials make statements like banning businesses over their political affiliations, it borders on criminal behavior.

I'm personally glad that Chick-Fil-A wised up, but the damage is done. This jack off is not only threatening the monetary security of himself, but also his thousand upon thousands of employees.

While Chick-fil-A took a lot of backlash, they also gained a lot of support from people who agree with their views. Now that they've retracted their funding, they've put themselves in a situation where the pro-gay group still doesn't like them and now the anti-gay group has a reason to also be against them. It's a lose-lose set up. The best they can do now is appeal to the anti-gay group by playing the victim card and saying that 'the homosexual agenda forced them to pull their funding' or something along those lines, because there's really no way for them to win back the pro-gay-marriage group at this point.
If you're reading this, you're awesome and you should feel awesome.

Anti-gay groups are abominable.

Even better, they just said they NEVER wanted to pull funding from anti-gay groups.

So it's DOUBLE BACKLASH.

Anybody notice the amount of publicity they are getting from this. Such free advertisement the left has been giving them.

Seeing as how most of the IP action there is mid-west near Texas, my guess is both sides are picking up the story.

It's a good point though about the coverage.

I did too. So I stopped eating it as part of the boycott. Now I have a reason to go back. :)

I never stopped eating there; the food is too damn good. I just think the fact that this is a story, let alone a huge frenzy of a story, is kind of silly.

I agree, and was far more offended by Mayor Menino (mumbles to his friends) than the position Chic-fil-a took. Although they pulled their support, they also got their last word where they are moving into Boston, right behind city hall, right behind mayor Menino's office.

It's a saying. that publicity is publicity, bad good or otherwise your business is getting noticed. Prime example is the Chick fila appreciation day when people lined up for blocks to eat at chick fil a...never would have happened had this not become a huge story.

So the Gulf oil spill wasn't bad publicity for BP?

It's a saying, not a law. But even then BP's sales didn't take a hit after the oil spill so who's to say even that was 'bad' publicity.
