Is censoring the material that people are allowed to post on the internet a violation of freedom of speech rights?

Depends on who's property it's done on. If the site is publicly owned, yes. If it's privately owned, no. However, it does make the owner a douchebag.

No, it doesn't.

Why not? Surely posting, say, pictures of grotesquely mutilated can be more justifiably censored than a rant about your religious beliefs (unless of course you live int he Middle East).

Nothing should be censored though.

Private censorship is allowed.
Public censorship would be allowed, if space is limited (you cannot post signs on government property). Of course, they could only make blanket censorship, like no religious posts of any kind.
