If a person is "sucking" s/he is engaged in sexual activity. Why would this be a negative thing?

Most of our swears and such are sexual or scatological.

I've always figured it stemmed from homophobia. Like, it's applied to a dude (because women don't leave the kitchen, amirite), and they suck D, which is of course a bad thing because they're a DUDE.

Obviously, I don't cotton to those things, but I always thought that was its origin.

"Cotton to" is an idiom meaning "Agree with" or "like". As in "I don't cotton to the idea of them making a new Robocop, because it's going to be terrible"

Eh, sometimes. Arizona doesn't really have its own culture.

Since I have a natural tendency to be formal to the point of disconcerting, I've made it a point to learn and occasionally utilize informal idioms when I am trying to interact with people. When I was twelve I forced myself to learn to occasionally say "ain't".

Same thing with "you're such a pvssy", or "fvck you", as someone else said, many insults are sexual, at least indirectly.

The term "suck" as in being a bad thing is military in origin. It refers to bullet holes in the chest. These holes suck air into the lung cavity and so the lung fails to inflate. Such a wound "sucks" and that is where it comes from originally.

The term "suck" as in being a bad thing is military in origin. It refers to bullet holes in the chest. These holes suck air into the lung cavity and so the lung fails to inflate. Such a wound "sucks" and that is where it comes from originally.

Really? Interesting. Do you have some references I can go to?

Also watch movies about WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Thanks! Those a great. That's not really the citation I was looking for though, haha! I believe you that wounds "suck." I was just wondering if you had cites linking this phenomenon to the etymology (origin) of the word "suck" in general. Do you have anything for that?

If a person is "sucking" s/he is engaged in sexual activity. Why would this be a negative thing?

Not sure I can find written quotations. That is how we used it in the army. There is a movie about Vietnam or maybe Korea, where a medic says "that sucks" using both meanings at the same time.

Funny thing about the sexual reference is that we call it "blowing" like on a flute or recorder.
