Isn't it racist when kids dress up as Native Americans for Halloween? Why don't I see people make an objection to this? I mean, if someone dressed himself up as a Jew, then wouldn't you call that racist? Moreover, if someone painted his skin to look like a black person, that would be racist too, right?

People do make an objection to this.

There was actually a somewhat recent poster campaign created to try and convince people not to wear these kinds of costumes anymore: http://www.usatoday.com...

Is it racist for an Asian kid to dress as a pilgrim? Is it racist for a black kid to dress as a knight? Is it racist for an Arab kid to dress as a Viking? To all of these, of course not. For the same reason, what you're talking about isn't racist. You're dressing as a culture, not as an ethnicity.

Is it insensitive and offensive to some people to paint your face the color of the culture you're representing's typical ethnicity? Yes.

Anyway, I'm using "racist" in the way I know you meant it, but it's wrong. So many people use racism to mean "might offend members of a specific race." Here's what racism actually is: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com...

The only thing is that "Native American" is an ethnicity.

Yes, but when people dress as Native Americans, they're dressing only as a specific culture of Native Americans popularized in media. Plenty of Native American cultures dressed differently. Saying that dressing like ( http://www.spirithalloween.com... ) is like dressing like a Native American is like saying that dressing like ( http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com... ) is like dressing like a black person or that dressing like ( http://images.halloweencostumes.com... ) is like dressing like a white person.

If anything, it's racist to say that that one culture's way of dressing represents Native Americans. I'm sure the Aztecs and Mayans would be upset by that.

Yeah, but there are many ethnic groups of Native Americans (like the Inca, Mayans, Aztecs, Lakota, etc.). So, if you dress up as a Lakota Indian, for example, you're trying to mimic a Lakota individual. Wouldn't this be racist? Also, I didn't mean to say that one ethnic group's way of dressing represented the whole Native American people. Sorry.

I mean, if you wear ethnic clothes without the intention of mimicking an individual of a certain ethnicity, then I guess it may not be racist? Like, you could dress up as a Viking, but are you exactly trying to act as if you're a Scandinavian? If yes, then that may be racist.

Anyway, I feel that I could be wrong about this. I am just conveying what I think.

Everything is racist and everyone is a racist . What a tired and worthless subject racism is. It is so over used and abused it doesn't mean anything anymore. Just like when people call other people Nazi. Who F-ing cares anymore except those who want to claim victim status to explain away all their failures and short comings. Now it's come full circle, Hate the evil white guy of privilege. Ya I had everything handed to me on a silver platter and everyone wanted to hire me and everyone made special exceptions for me because I am white NOT EVER. Now our public schools teach white kids to loath themselves and feel guilty to even be alive because they are white.
It's not your views that divide us, it's what you think my views should be that divides us.

If you think I will give up my rights and forsake social etiquette to make you "FEEL" better you are sadly mistaken
