This often involves racial/ethnic minority and women related empowerment, but not limited to.
My belief is that they are necessary. The way the system is set up, and I'm primarily focusing on the States, is to promote focusing on self improvement. The idea that anyone of any race or ethnicity for instance, can achieve anything they want (for themselves), which usually entails obtaining wealth. While this may be true to some degree, and might satisfy a person who is part of a marginalized group who might have become wealthy, it fails to solve the problems that will still exist in the given groups corporate sense. And the successful individual will at times become used as a model to suggest that addressing inequalities the group itself is corporately facing is simply complaining. And again, that's because the system is constantly pushing the personal empowerment theme over group empowerment.
The empowerment group enables the group to fill in the cracks that are left open by the system, and push back against the tendency for the system to backslide from equality.
