On This Day In Chicago, 1966: John Lennon Apologized For "Jesus" Comment

August 12, 2014

Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn"t argue about that; I"m right and I"ll be proved right. We"re more popular than Jesus now. I don"t know which will go first"rock "n" roll or Christianity. " John Lennon

Lennon made those remarks to a British journalist in March, 1966.

It was 48 years ago today that Lennon, joined by his band mates, held a news conference to apologize. The Beatles had arrived in America the day before for what turned out to be the band"s final U.S. tour.

"I didn"t mean it the way they said it," he said at the news conference held at the Astor Tower Hotel on Chicago"s Gold Coast.

Yes...and?

The comment was offensive. There are many good Christians, and insulting their faith was inappropriate. They apologized. End of story.

I assume because you find some relevance in reposting a quote from 59 years ago that does not reflect the view of a majority of Americans. I am still baffled as to what relevance this may have, but feel free to enlighten me.

48 years and you are right that for the most part of the 2% of America that are atheists probably only a subset known as anti-theists would hold to something like this view. Since the Beatles were trying to appeal to a mass market then what they did was not a smart decision and they ended up having to admit that the were wrong in their Jesus Comment.

And the Beatles are no longer a group but unlike what they said, Jesus and His religion are still around : )

Well, just because someone is atheist does not mean they would begrudge others their faith. I am not religious but would still find comments like that off-putting.

And the Beatles are no longer a group but unlike what they said, Jesus and His religion are still around : )

Ah, but their legacy will last forever. It can even be argued that the Christianity of Christ's lifetime is no more, yet it's legacy will reverberate through eternity.

Not surprising from John Lennon. Didn't he have a song calling for outlawing or abolishment of religion?

That was rhetorical. He had a song asking for the outlawing of religion and instead of local governments a one world government.
