For those of you who don't know what a shock site is, let me offer you a definition.
"•A shock site is a website that is intended to be offensive, disgusting or/and disturbing to its viewers, containing materials of high shock value ..."
(SOURCE) http://www.google.com...
"Rotten.com", "Goatse.cx," or "Lemonparty.org" are a few examples. (I do not reccomend looking at these websites, and I take no responsibility if you do. That is why I did not link the material. The choice is yours alone, not mine.)

Shock sites use sexual, violent, and nasty content in order to disgust the viewer, who visit the site for unknown reasons. So the question is this... Why do people visit these sites? I think that it is because humans are naturally curious to what is taboo and awkward to us. I'm sure that there will be some on debate.org who will check out a shock site due to this post, well that would be a testimony to my point.

So are there any opinions about shock sites? Is the material too horrible? Should they be censored? What sort of reasons would draw someone to go onto such a site? And what about the people who run these sites? What are their goals?

I think that these sites should not be blocked, and that they should be embraced due to how they fulfill our more deviant curiosities.

I've been to rotten.com before. I was curious to see what all the hype was about. Being quite desensitized, it really didn't bother me that much.

Censors should be involuntarily turned into goatse men.
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

I'm not sure that explanation works for people who go to these sites multiple times.

So are there any opinions about shock sites?
They're disgusting.
Is the material too horrible?
Sure? Don't know the difference between "horrible" and "too horrible" :P
Should they be censored?
No. Free speech mang.
What sort of reasons would draw someone to go onto such a site?
Your explanation is fine for first timers. I have no explanation for those who do it over and over.
And what about the people who run these sites? What are their goals?
You'd have to ask them.

I think that these sites should not be blocked, and that they should be embraced due to how they fulfill our more deviant curiosities.
Uh no. Not for me. I will block them, and I won't embrace them, because unlike some deviants out there, when I see some of this stuff I throw up. And I'd like to keep my food going down the correct way, thank you very much.
: If you weren't new here, you'd know not to feed me such attention. This is like an orgasm in my brain right now. *hehe, my name is in a title, hehe* (http://www.debate.org...)

Just in case I get into some BS with FREEDO again about how he's NOT a narcissist.

"The law is there to destroy evil under the constitutional government."
So... what's there to destroy evil inside of and above the constitutional government?

For much the same reason people slow down when driving past accidents to look. The macabre and grotesque have appeal, love to hate.

I don't see anything morally repugnant about enjoying a shock site (and I use enjoy in an unconventional way). Of course, those who enact the acts that may be recorded and posted on shock sites may have a different moral shade :)

hmm.... been on http://encyclopediadramatica.com... insertnamehere?

bit shockier than rotten in my opinion. Remember people, scroll Slowly and do not give up half way through :P

oh yes and once you've finished do not click i'm still offended or whatevr it was, because when i did that hundreds of blank windows kept coming up and my computer started yelling: "hey everyone! i'm watching gay porn!" over and over again.... was not amused.

personally, i don't think there's anything wrong with it. For certain jobs you need to be desensitised so its better to do it now than to vomit all over your A&E patient...

I think people do go there for the first time to see what the hype is about. Why they go back several times after that probably differs for everyone. Personally, I've never been to any of those sites simply because I have no desire to be grossed out. Why would I go look at something that will purposefully upset me? And by upset I mean probably effect me in a negative way. Haha I have will power and reason over my curiosity :P

lol that website needs a more serious warning than "bit shockier than"

i totally did not take the warning seriously the first time i saw it....

and yeah, personally, i see looking at stuff like that as a challenge... can i handle it? kinda silly but... i've never suffered any negative effects really, so its mostly harmless.
evidently i only come to ddo to avoid doing homework...

Is there anything worse than what is on that page? I can't think of anything, except gory Childporn and video's depicting the actions in the images.

what is sad is that they reposted many of the same pictures over and over again, and many are clearly fake, though many were probably real.

I'd have to say though, the last one was definately the worst.

These websites seem to simply be an extension of interests that people already had.

That is, snuff films and shock films like "Faces of Death." No one has seen 9mm? This phenomenon began primarily in the Eighties, when entertainment like this sharply inclined in popularity.

Those sites are one thing, but humanity can be vicious, disgusting, evil, and heartless. Visiting Third World countries is undoubtedly a more sobering experience.

I was swore off this type of stuff after seeing 3 men 1 hammer. It was more sad and repugnant to me than gross but still.

That dared me to look at it lol and it wasn't that bad. I mean, it was pretty grotesque, but I scrolled through it rather quickly and what made it not so awful was reminding myself that all of that looked completely fake. Since it looked so fake, I wasn't as grossed out as I should have been. But yea, if I ever go back, it will probably be to "dare" myself and see just how desensitized I can be.

Freedom of expression is paramount, and if you're told day in and day out how horrible this stuff is, the more likely you are to get curious. You said yourself that exposure to it is entirely by choice, nobody makes anyone look at this stuff, nobody forces it upon anyone else. The fact that it exists, I would argue, is paramount to the argument that there are things we do not want to expose ourselves to, but it must be our personal choice not to expose ourselves personally to them, because the morbid curiosity of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and total strangers might not be shared with us, but we have no right to say that they can't go and seek it out, we have no right to deny them that expose, because we have no right to force our preference for non-shock site material on anyone else in precisely the same way that nobody else has the right to force shock site material on the rest of us.

It stands as a testament to the grotesque and the offensive and the disgusting and the potentially illegal, but what it stands for is far more honourable than it initially seems.
What fresh dickery is the internet up to today?
