This is a very controversial subject.
People who argue for it are against it because it's a horrible experience comparable with torture. After 11 days in solitary confinement, time slows down for you. You're brain may get damage similar to head trauma. Inmates often become depressed and suicidal. Many try to hurt themselves or kill themselves because they can't take it anymore. After a few weeks, some of them start seeing things. And when they are released they are much more violent and some even go insane. Plus, it's 3 times more expensive to keep an inmate in solitary confinement.
However, many feel that despite how terrible it is, it is a necessary tool. There are 3 types of inmates in solitary confinement. The first are those who prefer it because they like to be alone or they feel really guilty about their crimes. It's not a problem for these people because they don't mind it. For them, it's great because you get breakfast, lunch, and dinner in bed and you're always in bed. The other kind of inmates are there for their own protection, mentally ill people. And the last kind are people who break the rules and would hurt someone if not confined.
Both sides have valid arguments.
So I have an idea. Why don't we put a little television screen or radio or something in the room? That'll keep them sane longer. We can put them at places in the room we know they can't reach to grab and use its parts to make a shank or something. But the idea behind solitary confinement is to prevent people from hurting others or getting hurt. That justifies their solitary confinement. But it doesn't mean they should suffer. They need a little entertainment to keep sane.
