I find it an incredibly confusing display of information. Particularly don't understand how the horizontal axis can represent both "survival values" and "self-expression" values.

the less time spent worrying about where your next meal is coming from the more time you have to express yourself i'd imagine.. 'tis odd in fairness.

I gather from it that "self-expression" means that people tend to be more liberal with their lives, how they run them, and what they do with them. Survival values are about not wasting life so frivolously.

its a continuum. the less well off you or materially (and apparently the more ex-communist you are :P) the more you worry about survival and its material means rather that self expression or self fulfillment.
evidently i only come to ddo to avoid doing homework...
