I created a poll about this subject, but wanted to elaborate in the forum. My question comes in several parts, really.

- Do you have (buy) real art, or just whatever you found... I don't know, at the furniture store.
- If you have actual artwork, did you know the artist or meet the artist?
- If you do, how much do you pay?
- If not, how much would you think to pay?

At this point in my life, I have more than I can hang in my house. For one thing, my wife is an artist (cheat), but I have known a number of artists, and have a number of their works. As best I know, there are TWO pieces that I am unaware of the artist. They are very nice, and original works.

As to cost, I am very curious what others think. Buying from artists is NOT as expensive as you may think. Smaller bits may be 150-200$. Large pieces might be 500$-+ This is not outrageous when even crap factory art costs about the same range.

Thoughts?

What do you think is reasonable?

I think part of what I am getting at is that the perceptions are out of whack with reality for most people.

Should add some plugs for friends.

This is a couple of my wife's paintings

Ivory

Worried Man

And a very good friend in SB
http://chrispotterart.blogspot.com...

Look at the last links for some decent prices. Again, its not like you are buying Rembrandt here. There are good artists everywhere, one is bound to suit your tastes, and really mean something.

Most people I know have stuff they buy from artists, but that may be an affectation of the people I know. When I go into "strangers" homes I often see factory art, and just don't get it.

That depends on how much money I have free to spend. Probably no more than $500.

I think part of what I am getting at is that the perceptions are out of whack with reality for most people.

They are.

First, make friends with artists. They are fun, interesting and intelligent people. Like, I have NEVER meet an artiest that didn't fit those three descriptors.

Second, put some art around you. Art that has some meaning to you. It is a huge difference in how you experience your own space.

Lol

If I bought art it would just be a way to diversify my portfolio, and anything ag or below market value would be fine.

I might consider some Transhumanist art, if it appealed to me, but most transhumanist art sucks

Nice!

That's the only way I'd buy it.

You should meet some.

Again, we are not talking investment stuff here. I have several that I am sure are nominally "worth more" today, but that is not how I would think of it, or bother with.

I know some artists, and I'd buy their art before a strangers, unless I was investing. Although Transhumanist art would be nice. I also have considered buying something from "Pricasso" as a gag gift a few times

I did misread that at first - Pricasso. I was going to get all huffy. Picasso is magnificent!

Should have put that in my question. Again, I think most people think of art gallery like crap from the movies. Like you can't get in unless you were invited to an opening. They are NORMAL businesses, and want people to come in and look.

Well, yea, they can be intimidating, and the people can be jerks, but that shouldn't stop anyone from going.

I went to one in DC, and I also have been to the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.

No, and you shouldn't buy a Van Gogh anyway. They are too good to not share with everyone.

MoMA is incredible. Have a great story about that place I may share some time.

As for my favorite famous artists, in descending order...
Picasso
Rothko
Monet
Van Gogh

It's not one of his more famous pieces...plus, I'd only want to have it a few months out the year. The rest of the time I'd loan it out to museums. I am aware that art collectors should be obligated to not horde their troves from the public eye.
