When it comes to spending your own money, is there a limit to what you would consider an acceptable amount or would you consider some purchases obscene?

I ask this because I am currently looking at this (scroll up) http://x17online.com... and thinking: $30,000 for a handbag?

Not to mention the amount of money people (ie. celebrities) spend on cars and jewellery and dresses and what have you.

Is this acceptable? Should this be acceptable? What are your thoughts?

I'd say $30,000 is definitely a bit much to be paying for a handbag. That one is not even that nice. You can get way nicer looking ones for under $100.

Obscene? perhaps... Acceptable? Absolutely. It's taking large sums of money out of the hands of idiots and putting it back into the economy. Win win.

It really depends on how much money you have, and how much you value the product. That said even if I was as rich as Midas paying that much for a handbag would seem bizarre.
I am voting for Innomen because of his intelligence, common sense, humility and the fact that Juggle appears to listen to him. Any other Presidential style would have a large sub-section of the site up in arms. If I was President I would destroy the site though elitism, others would let it run riot. Innomen represents a middle way that works, neither draconian nor anarchic and that is the only way things can work. Plus he does it all without ego trips.

But is it obscene, as in morally wrong? Considering the state of poverty in the world... what are people's opinions on it? Or is it their money to do with what they please?

That is a complicated issue.
Morally speaking you should be free to spend your money as you will, so long as you meet your obligations and don't cause harm with it. It's your money after all.

Sure you could not buy the $30,000 handbag and give the money to a charity that supports the third world country in which it was made, by 11 year old boys that earn a penny a day.

Indeed you could argue that by not doing so you are causing, or allowing harm to occur.

I think you have to find a balance between the two, and in fact after considering the issue I have to conclude that to me personally spending $30,000 on a handbag or a single item of clothing is obscene.

I presume by such reasoning you are adverse to all luxury goods then?

Sure this won't be a popular opinion round here, but I say these kind of luxury goods are cool as long as they have the sh1t taxed out of them.

That is for the individual to decide for themselves. If it is morally repugnant for them, then so be it. If they spend their own money in whatever manner fitting to them, so be it.

I rather see that all handbags are worth 10k $ than 40$. People already buy too much stuff, at least make them think twice before they change their wardrobe...

Lol, if she tried to cross the border with that thing, they'd probably check it to see if any Mexicans were hiding in it.

Not necessarily. I'm just pointing out that it's a waste when there's nicer looking items for much cheaper. Maybe I'm just cheap though. I can be at times. :/

One can think "It is immoral to spend your money this way" without thinking "It should be illegal to spend your money this way."

Taxes on luxury goods would seem to me to be the most reasonable of all taxes, they do not punish industry or enterprise, only excessive greed and flamboyance.

I think it is wrong that one person can work hard all their life and struggle to provide their family with a decent standard of living, while someone else can swan around with £10,000 handbags because their daddy or husband owns property.

Pretty sure you would have agreed with me before you got brainwashed by the cool kid objectivists on this site lol.

2) A lot of that price is tax.

Could you enlighten me as to how much?
