I'm down with that.

So you're not down with the second law of thermodynamics? :P

Or were you just referring to biological immortality?

"to strive for" doesn't mean "to succeed"

also how does calling it biological immortality make the problem any different?

Ought implies can. See: Kant, Immanuel.

Fair enough. But if you were claiming that the "ought implies can" principle is invalid simply because it was Kant's idea, that would be a genetic fallacy.

i agree with this, and it makes me LOL. but also i didn't think the OP meant "should humans strive for immortality" as if reaching immortality were a moral imperative, which is what kant's analysis applies to.

No, we shouldn't.
The thought of people living forever stops our line of evolution.
And, to be quite honest, with the world the way it is now, I think the human race could do with more information.

If I could then I would. Not really a matter for debate for me.
I am voting for Innomen because of his intelligence, common sense, humility and the fact that Juggle appears to listen to him. Any other Presidential style would have a large sub-section of the site up in arms. If I was President I would destroy the site though elitism, others would let it run riot. Innomen represents a middle way that works, neither draconian nor anarchic and that is the only way things can work. Plus he does it all without ego trips.

There's a lot of stuff Objectivism doesn't touch on Kant - the big two are metaphysics and ethics which are fairly opposing.

Actually it probably does not, if we reach the point where we have immortality then we have either transcended biology or have nigh complete control over it and can alter ourselves at whim. Failling that evolution is not a deity to be served. It is like saying that we should not have planes because they defy gravity.

And, to be quite honest, with the world the way it is now, I think the human race could do with more information.

We have wikipedia!

No. I really think, and accept, death as a natural conclusion to life. It's normal and healthy for people to approach a stage of life where death isn't so scary.

Such acceptance is only normal and healthy because death is inevitable, if we can prevent death then we should grab that chance with both hands.

Such aspirations are not like wishing to fly, but are far greater in implication; it changes the definition of society, roles, and life itself. Nah, all good things come to an end, and i am happy with that, whether or not there is eternity behind it.
